Carlsbad, California

Updated April 8, 2026

Located about 70 miles south of Disneyland, Carlsbad is so many great things all rolled into one quint town.

Let’s take a look at all it has to offer.

Basic Scoop

Carlsbad is a great little town in the northern part of San Diego County. We spend a lot of time here, as we live in Oceanside, the town just north of it.

It has great beaches and friendly people. Great shopping and dining too!

From Disneyland, go south on the 5, exit Carlsbad Village Drive and drive until you find parking near the beach. It’s easy to find.

My Favorite Beaches

Carlsbad State Beach has been a long time favorite for our family and my kids still go. This is walkable to Carlsbad Village, mentioned below, and has close restrooms.

Tamarack Beach has a lot of surfers. Volleyball nets too. It’s not entirely walkable to food, but there is a nice restroom at Tamarack and Coast Highway.

South Carlsbad State Beach is further from the village, but includes The Camp Store, which is an unexpected delight.

Shopping and Dining

Carlsbad Village includes so much to do and provides the best overall experience in town. I go into more detail on what it has to offer below.

If you’re looking for more serious shopping, consider the following:

Carlsbad Village

Carlsbad Village is the hub of this town and includes lots of both dining and shopping options. this link includes a directory.

Some tips for this area, as we go a lot….

  • I enjoy breakfast at the Naked Cafe occasionally and love the popcorn shop, as they have warm butter to top your fresh popped corn.
  • People rave about Gonzo Ramen, but I’ve never been.
  • My kids love Knockout Pizza.
  • For coffee, there’s both a Starbucks and Better Buzz off Coast Highway not far from the beach.
  • Locals love Swami’s for breakfast and lunch.
  • Kona Kraft Cafe is picture perfect, at the corner of Coast Highway and Carlsbad Village. We dined here for a casual Easter breakfast April 2026 and it was delicious.
  • Norte has been a longtime family favorite. Find on the edge of the Carlsbad Village area close to the beach. Dine 2 hours prior to sunset and then walk along Coast Highway to see the sun go down after dinner.

Carlsbad Flower Fields

What a sight to see in person! Wow.

These are literal fields of flowers (55 acres!) that you walk through along with several other things to do at this fun stop.

Adults are $27. Kids, $17.

There are great places to take the most beautiful photos, a maze, tractor rides, playgrounds, informative exhibits on the local flowers, a butterfly garden and more. (Some of these options include an additional fee.)

Find all the details here.

Mid-March to Mid-April are ideal times to visit. I recommend you arrive at opening for the best weather most days. And you’ll experience much lower crowds, too. On our recent visit, we arrived at 9:00am. By 10:30am, we could tell a noticeable difference in the crowd level.

LEGOLAND

LEGOLAND is a treasure of a park and I recommend going if you are a LEGO enthusiast or if you have kids 12 or under.
