We took our first Waymo ride recently!
Waymo is an autonomous, or self-driving, vehicle.
Let’s take a look at what it was like.

Basic Scoop
Waymos can be found in only 5 cities currently including:
- Los Angeles
- Phoenix
- San Francisco
- Austin
- Atlanta
Coming soon: Miami and Washington D.C.

We downloaded the app (screenshot above) and ordered the ride. It was super easy – just like Uber or Lyft. The cars are Jaguars – all high end and clean. They allow you to connect Spotify or I Heart Radio. And there’s a screen in the back showing you navigation. The cost of the trip was about $10, on par with what I would have paid for an Uber.
You unlock the door of the car with the app. I fumbled this when the car arrived and panicked. My son quickly steered me in the right direction.
This quick video shows how our ride began. As heard, a voice greets you personally and makes sure you are buckled. It explains the process, like you’re going on a ride at Disneyland. But with more detail.
There were 2 of us and we both rode in the back. The ride accommodated up to 4 people, allowing 3 people in back and 1 up front in the passenger seat.
Our wait time was about 11 minutes. And our ride time was about the same. We only went a few blocks – from the World Market near 3rd and Fairfax, back to the Petersen Automotive Museum parking structure.

What we Thought about the Ride
It was exciting! I was nervous for sure. My son, Jack, who is 19 was with with me. We just went a few city blocks, but L.A. traffic is no joke. It was fascinating watching this driverless vehicle maneuver through situations I would have found challenging.
I was at peace knowing there were no distractions like texts or calls for the “driver”. And there was no impact from a bad morning or other personal issue that might make a human driver distracted or even rage filled. Also, the car was clean. No leftover food from the driver. Finally, no small talk!
It was oddly settling in some aspect to trust a robot. I can’t even believe I’m saying it. But it was. My son felt the same.
The downfall, of course, is participating in an industry that takes away a job from a human. It’s complicated.
