Disneyland Monorail

Updated March 23, 2026

The Disneyland Monorail isn’t an essential part of transportation on site, but it’s a fun one.

Let’s take a look at what you need to know.

Basic Scoop

The Monorail in Anaheim runs from Downtown Disney to Tomorrowland inside Disneyland Park.

And back.

That’s it.

If you’re a WDW fan, know that this is more of a novelty as far as transportation goes. It’s not a key part of travel like it is in Orlando.

A few important bits of info:

  • The ride is just a few minutes each way. Literally 3 minutes travel time usually. Loading and unloading extends the experience to about 11 minutes.
  • It goes 30 mph!
  • It’s a 2.5 mile round trip.
  • The Monorail closes at least 30 minutes before park close and pauses for fireworks each evening.
  • Hours vary. Check here for your timing.
  • A Disneyland park ticket (and reservation) are needed to ride even though the station is in Downtown Disney, which does not require a ticket. Because it lets guests off in the park, a ticket is essential.
  • The Monorail is all dressed up for the 70th! Check it out here.

Best Times to Ride

  • If you’re staying at the Disneyland Hotel, use this option for a quicker trip back to your room. It’s a nicer alternative to weaving in and out of pedestrian traffic through the park and then Downtown Disney.
  • Ride in the afternoon for a nice break from the crowds.
  • I do not recommend using the Monorail for rope drop or early entry. It’s too unpredictable at opening. Always go to the main gate. Here’s more on that.

How to ride in the Front (or Back)

Disneyland (sometimes) allows guests to ride in the very front (called the nose) or the very back of the vehicle.

Ask a cast member if there’s room. They’re always super accommodating with this little bit of magic if timing allows.

You’ll get a great view of the ride (in the photo, below) and you’ll get a peek at the driver’s seat (in the photo, above). Here’s a video of what this looks like.

History

Per Disney, “The Disneyland Monorail was the first transportation system of its kind in America. The current version combines the sleek styling of the 1959 classic with new technologies and subtle design changes, bringing a retro-futuristic look and contemporary feel to the timeless Disneyland icon.

Today, the Disneyland Monorail is comprised of the Red, Blue and Orange Mark VII trains. Because the system uses a 600-volt DC power source, it emits no direct exhaust or pollutants into the atmosphere.”
