Fish Extenders and Pixie Dust for your Disney Cruise

Updated April 10, 2025

As with so many other parts of the Disney culture, the Disney Cruise line has fun stuff you should know about.

I’ve been on two cruises so far, participated both times, and I’m so glad I did.

This tradition is really special. I hope you’ll consider it for your sailing.

Basic Scoop

First, let’s start with some terminology….

Fish Extender: These are usually made of fabric, look similar to a large envelope with a string attached to the top, and hang outside your stateroom door on a fish-shaped hook, hence the name “fish extender”.

Some people make theirs. Amazon sells them, too. Fish Extenders are intended to catch any Pixie Dust that could be delivered to you with an organized gift exchange.

Pixie Dust: Any sort of small gift or treat you bring to give to other guests. This includes items gifted in Fish Extenders and otherwise. It’s just a way to spread the magic. More on this, below.

Stateroom: Your stateroom is your hotel room, but you’re not in a hotel, you’re on a ship. So, they call it a shiproom stateroom.

How it Works

This is a fun way to leave and receive little treats for others on your Disney Cruise.

Essentially, guests will leave a surprise gift (pixie dust) in your fish extender at some point during your sailing.

Some guests prefer to deliver their gifts all at once. Some do it casually as they’re walking around the ship. Many sign their name on their gifts; others do not.

The group you join will provide a list of names participating and their stateroom number so you know where to find them.

How to Find a Group

If you’re part of a group sailing, ask your event coordinator if you have a list already created.

If not, search Facebook.com for your exact sailing group including destination, ship, dates, etc. There should be an option to join in the group.

I ordered this from Amazon.

Pixie Dust Ideas

Depending on how large your list is, this tradition can get expensive. My first sailing included 100 people!

Consider the following before deciding what you want to pixie dust gift:

*How big your group is

*How much space you’ll have to transport your gifts

*Food allergies

Here are some fun things I’ve seen:

*Button

*”Emergen-sea” kit (photo included in this post)

*Koozie

*Ice cream dish/toppings (soft serve ice cream is available all day and night)

On my first cruise, one of our guests had a small budget, so he hand-made bookmarks for everyone. I still have mine.

This tradition is completely voluntary, but such fun. We really enjoyed returning to our stateroom to find a little treat!

  1. I’m helping to run a FE gift exchange for my upcoming cruise. The number one question is what kind of gift should I give? My response is usually to give what you would love to receive. Consider not shopping at Dollar Tree, but also to not shop from an expensive store either. Check interest and Google for ideas if you refer to make your own gifts, , but most of all, have fun with this event!!

  2. This is a bit misleading. Pixie Dust and Fish Extender Exchanges are two different things.

Pixie Dust is just random, unexpected gift as you would at the parks. Sometimes this is left in the Fish Extender Pockets, sometimes it is left in other places or handed directly to you. Some groups have sign-ups just so that you can identify someone else from your Facebook group that is sailing and gift to them. It is not reciprocal and you are not expected or required to give to anyone or everyone on the list.

Fish Extender or FE exchanges are organized gifting. You sign up for a specific group and have a list of cabins assigned to you to give to. This is an exchange. Items are tagged to identify who they are to and from. You know in advance who you are giving to and should be receiving from. These groups are typically 5-10 cabins.

    1. Hi, Joelle.

I appreciate your explanation. Thank you.

I’m trying to show what a Fish Extender is because that terminology is so confusing to someone who doesn’t know Disney Cruises. But I appreciate you providing these details!

  3. do you have more then one person assigned to you? 100 people is a lot! I would love to participate but wow.
