Family Recess

Hands down, this is one of the best things I’ve done for my family in a long, long time.

A couple of years ago, we started Family Recess at our house. And, it’s been such a blessing.

Basic Scoop

Essentially, we dedicate time each week to play games or do a craft as a family. Depending on everyone’s work schedule, this can happen 1-3 times a week.

Giving it a name, Family Recess, lets everyone know we’re getting together to do something fun. They don’t always know what’s ahead, but they have a basic understanding.

Why We Started

Our kids are 16, 18, and 23. As we emerged from the covid era, where time together was plentiful, I noticed everyone was going in different directions and we seemed less connected.

Finding structured time like this brought us back together.

The Rules

There’s only one. No phones allowed.

And, we surprisingly never have an issue with this. I’m a firm believer that kids WANT this kind of interaction, but it’s hard for them to know how to ask for it today.

Ideas for Recess

Think beyond watching a movie and instead focus on things that encourage discussion and interaction.

  • Card games – Uno is our favorite.
  • Backyard games – Corn Hole, Badminton, and Darts are a few of the games we’ve played.
  • Crafts – Painting bird feeders was a recent craft everyone enjoyed. We’ve painted ornaments and made sidewalk chalk, too.
  • Seasonal fun – Dying Easter eggs, carving pumpkins…etc.
  • Gardening – Depending on the time of year, you could pot flowers. Mums in the fall would be nice. Think about all the things your kids asked to help with when they were toddlers and let them do it now!

Make it Disney

As with all parts of life, a Disney theme can be added!

Consider gathering to play a game while you discuss a future trip. Add Disney themed snacks and play Disney music, too.

The Surprising Result

Our kids enjoy it as much as we do. No one fusses when it’s time to get together. And the kids often stay far past when we expect the night to end.

We already gather for meals and to watch college football, etc. But, Recess really been a wonderful addition. I encourage you to try it!
