Keepsake Recipe Box

Updated December 13, 2025

I don’t think my kids fully appreciate this gift now, but I hope someday they will.

After noticing how much I loved seeing my relatives and friends’ handwritten recipes while planning our Thanksgiving meal, I decided to write our family favorites down on paper for our kids.

Basic Scoop

A pretty simple project really…..

I bought each child a recipe box and cards. I’ve included dates where appropriate and a small message, too.

I’ll continue to add recipes to what we have now, and then when they are out on their own, all of their childhood favorites will be in one place.

In their mom’s handwriting.

Here’s my mom’s recipe card that inspired this project. Her writing is so distinct:

Digital info will come and go. Paper seems safe for long term.

Since opening their gifts, our oldest recommended a cheat sheet on measurements so I’II be adding that to each. It makes me so happy to think about my kids using these boxes for years to come.

I only have one complaint about how this project turned out. I wish I had started it years ago. Here’s a quick reel of what it looks like.

Tips

Don’t get too fancy. Include the recipes your kids love.

Take your time with the project. I gifted the box and a few cards written to each child. It will take a while to write all of the cards needed.

Add more as you realize how much each child likes a certain dish.

Make it Disney

You could tweak my idea to include a Disney slant to it. Consider different tabs for different parks or lands or anything Disney-related.

Ideas for the Disney version:

  • Main Street Snacks
  • Favorite Cocktails
  • Salty Treats

Research online or buy a good book for Disney-inspired recipes.
