Oceanside, California

Updated February 17, 2026

It might be the best little surf town ever.

Oceanside is beautiful, friendly, diverse and full of things to do.

It’s my favorite place on earth and I feel fortunate to live here.

But, you’re wanting to visit! Let’s focus.

Here’s what you need to know.

Basic Scoop

Oceanside, California is my hometown. We’ve lived here for 15 years and love it.

Here’s a quick reel sharing some highlights from the pier.

It’s about 60 minutes south of Disneyland, easily reachable by car or train.

Oceanside is the northernmost coastal suburb in San Diego County.

Here’s the official scoop about our city.

How to get to Oceanside

Take the 5 south (or north) to Oceanside. It’s that easy.

Exit Mission Ave to get to the premier resorts and to the Oceanside Pier.

Exit Harbor Blvd to get the Oceanside Harbor.

Taking the Metrolink, Coaster or Amtrak train? Stop at the Oceanside station.

What to Do

Oceanside includes a variety of things to do. Here’s just a few:

  • Visit the beach
  • Visit the Oceanside Harbor (here’s a video of this fun area)
  • Go to Sunset Market downtown on Thursday night
  • Visit the Oceanside Pier

Where to Eat

  • Pacific 333 – This is a high end, ocean and pier view restaurant with good food and service.
  • Harbor Fish & Chips – We love this local place for fresh fish in the Oceanside Harbor.
  • Stratford at the Harbor – This restaurant has yummy breakfast/brunch and lunch.

Where to Drink

  • Rooftop Bar – As the name suggests, this option is at the top of Mission Pacific Hotel. Drinks are pricey, but well made. Love the hummus and olives, too.
  • Cococabana – This is another rooftop option, but tends to lean towards a younger crowd.

Where to Stay

The Seabird and Mission Pacific Hotel are our newest anchor hotels and they’re both fabulous.

Check out the Top Gun House, now a pie shop, at Mission Pacific.

Lots of people stay at North Coast Village. Roberts Cottages are adorable and very popular and require booking well in advance.

Sunset Market

Every Thursday, from 5-9pm, Oceanside hosts a huge market downtown.

All sorts of vendors set up shop and it’s a really good time.

Here’s more.

Harbor Beach

The Best Beaches

  • Pier View South Beach – This beach is the iconic Oceanside Beach. Rent bikes, buy beachy snacks, fish from the pier, dine, surf, play on the playgrounds, walk the strand, watch the surfers and more.
  • Harbor Beach – Harbor Beach is wide open and is walkable from the harbor. It’s busy like Pier View South Beach, so set up early for a good spot. This beach has fire pits, too, that can be claimed early in the morning for that evening. In the peak of summer, these are very popular.

Oceanside Harbor

The Oceanside Harbor is a working harbor and includes options for tourists to enjoy the ocean, too.

You can walk this area and it’s one of my favorite places to explore. Two miles of sidewalk take you to see a lot of the harbor.

There are places to park for free, but most spots up front require payment.

Harbor Beach is nearby too.

This link shares the current scoop on the harbor.

The Oceanside Pier

Another fun spot – the pier. You can fish from the pier and the bait shop on site has poles to rent.

Surf, dine, walk, and more in this area. You’ll find small vendors selling snacks and coffee. The two new resorts, Seabird and Mission Pacific, both have higher end options.

Tin Fish sells seafood and snacks. This option is under the bridge that leads to the pier.

Lots more info here.

Where to Watch the Sunset

Head to the Oceanside Pier.

Find a free spot to park on the street or pay the meter.

The show is worth it. I promise.

Want a cocktail in hand? Head to The Rooftop Bar at the Mission Pacific Hotel.

For free parking on Coast Highway, park south of Tyson Street. Meters start here and go north.
Love this new toy option at Pier View South Beach.

  1. Hi Casey! We’re visiting Oceanside from Canada and then will be heading to Disneyland on the train. What is the best way to get from Oceanside to Disneyland?

We soooo love Oceanside! This is our second time here and it has captured my heart!

    1. Oh, I’m glad you love our town!

I would take the train – Amtrak or the Metrolink. From the Oceanside station to the Anaheim ARTIC station. Does that work for you? An uber is around $75 average.
