Basic Scoop

Halloween Time at Disneyland is a special way to enjoy the parks and if you’re a fan of fall and the color orange and pumpkins, you’ll be in heaven. The park, as always, is decorated to perfection and it keeps getting better every year. Halloween Time occurs from August 23 – October 31, 2024.

Halloween Time is a general term given for how both Disneyland and Disney California Adventure celebrate the fall season. There is no additional fee to enjoy the parks at this time. (The ticketed Halloween event includes an additional fee. More on that later.)

On days that include a Halloween event that evening, California Adventure is open to all guests just like any other day. When it’s time for the party to begin, guests without a party ticket will kindly be escorted out. At that time, you may walk over to Disneyland park to continue the fun if you have a park hopper ticket. Otherwise, visit Downtown Disney to shop or dine.

Attractions that Transform for Halloween Time

The Haunted Mansion is turned into a celebration of Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas. This attraction is called Haunted Mansion Holiday.

Jack Skellington and Sally can often be found near the attraction in New Orleans Square for autographs and photos. Bring your camera and an autograph book for this.

The Haunted Mansion Holiday attraction transformation takes 2-3 weeks, so account for that timing during your trip planning. Classic Haunted Mansion is always closed the second part of August in preparation for this overlay.

Guardians of the Galaxy – MISSION: Breakout! transforms into “Monsters After Dark” each day around 4:00pm.

Two attractions in Cars Land transform as well.

They are:

  • Mater’s Graveyard JamBOOree
  • Luigi’s Honkin’ Haul-O-Ween

Details for Halloween Time

  • Pumpkins adorn every nook and cranny of Main Street and they’re all carved to perfection, with no two alike!
  • Disney villains can be found throughout the park. More on this, below, under ‘characters’.
  • Pumpkin infused and Halloween designed treats can be found all around the park and in Downtown Disney, too. Check out Marceline’s Confectionery in DTD, Candy Palace on Main Street in Disneyland or Trolley Treats on Buena Vista Street at California Adventure. Pooh’s Corner in Critter Country will have treats, too!
  • Seasonal, flavored beignets can be found at The Mint Julep in New Orleans Square and are divine! Mobile ordering is available at this location now. Do NOT stand in that long line. Mobile order and walk right up to grab your treats. This post explains how it works.
  • Dia de los Muertos celebrations will be held in Frontierland. They’re so colorful and fun.
  • Disney’s Happiest Haunts Tours became available in 2016, in addition to your theme park ticket. The tour focuses primarily on the Haunted Mansion, with details about its development and design. Check out my review on that experience, which will give you an overview of what a seasonal tour entails. This year’s tour looks a little different. Find more info on that on the Disneyland website.
  • The Halloween Tree can be found in Frontierland and it’s a site to see. Check out my Facebook post for more details on it and miscellaneous Halloween fun.

Strategies for Park Touring During Halloween Time

If you are visiting DCA for the day and attending a party: Use this post to ride every attraction in the park by late lunch. Then, during the party, you can focus on event-exclusive entertainment and characters.

If you are attending a party and want to visit Disneyland before the party starts: Use this post and strategies to get the majority of attractions complete by party time at DCA.

***Scroll way down for how to make the best use of your time at the event.

Halloween Food

Disney’s Foodie Guide to Halloween at the Disneyland Resort for 2023 can be found here.

Plaza Inn Halloween Screams Dining Package

New for 2022, this is back again for 2023. I would choose this for a few reasons, based on what I’ve seen:

  • Reserved seat for fireworks (rare at Disneyland)
  • Ideal food (savory and sweet…..this menu looks divine)

Note that you will have a great view of the fireworks themselves, but some of the castle/Matterhorn projections will be obstructed. If that’s important to you, skip this option.

Here‘s more scoop.

Magic Key Holders

Find an exclusive photo op for Magic Key holders at DCA during Oogie Boogie Bash. It’s located under Silly Symphony Swings in Pixar Pier.

Disneyland Resort Hotel Decor

Don’t miss visiting the Disney hotels during your Halloween trip. I share all about what you can expect at each location in this link.

Cars Land

Easily one of the best themed lands in any Disney Park, Cars Land is super impressive during Halloween Time. Don’t miss it.

This link takes you through a tour of what you’ll see.

Plaza de la Familia & Dia de los Muertos

Find all about how you can celebrate at both Disneyland and California Adventure from September 1, 2023 – November 2, 2023 at this link.

And, here’s the foodie guide for 2023!

Entertainment

  • Halloween Screams should be playing every night at Disneyland Park, with or without the actual fireworks. If the fireworks are NOT showing, don’t panic. The show is FANTASTIC even without the pyrotechnics.
  • The only parade happening at this time is during Oogie Boogie Bash.
  • Mickey’s Trick & Treat at Disney Theater in Hollywood Land (dance and listen to a not-so-scary story)

Use this link to check the full entertainment schedule. Change the date on the calendar to find exactly what will be happening during your visit.

Oogie Boogie Bash Date and Cost Details

Oogie Boogie Bash is a separate event from Halloween Time and requires an extra ticket. Ticket prices vary per date.

Some important scoop:

  • Visit this link to see ticket pricing per date.
  • Purchase tickets here.
  • Tickets for Oogie Boogie Bash go on sale June 29, 2023 to the general public. Magic Key Holders were able to purchase on June 27, 2023.
  • Disney states that tickets will not be available until 9:00am PST. ***I recommend checking the link to purchase tickets beginning at 7:00am PST the day you’re eligible. You’ll likely enter a queue to start and it often opens prior to when tickets are actually sold.
  • Tickets do sell out for the parties, so if you’re interested, buy soon.
  • Adults and kids pay the same price for party tickets.
  • All parties include a start time of 6:00pm and an end time of 11:00pm.

Dates and prices for the 2023 Oogie Boogie Bash include:

  • September 5 – $134
  • September 7 – $144
  • September 10 – $159
  • September 12 – $134
  • September 14 – $144
  • September 17 – $159
  • September 19 – $134
  • September 21 – $144
  • September 24 – $159
  • September 26 – $144
  • September 28 – $144
  • October 1 – $169
  • October 3 – $159
  • October 5 – $159
  • October 8 – $169
  • October 10 – $159
  • October 12 – $159
  • October 15 – $169
  • October 17 – $159
  • October 19 – $159
  • October 22 – $169
  • October 24 – $169
  • October 26 – $169
  • October 29 – $189
  • October 31 – $189

Some notes:

  • You do not need a regular park ticket in addition to the special event ticket to attend this party.
  • Because your Oogie Boogie Bash ticket allows you in 3 hours prior to party time, I recommend not buying a day’s ticket for the day you are attending the party. You will see and do plenty during the 3 hours prior to and during the event.
  • Your Halloween Party ticket does not allow you entry into the park for the entire day. You must purchase a day’s admission ticket to enter the park at opening or at any time before your “mix in” time.
  • If you have a regular theme park ticket for a day that includes Oogie Boogie Bash (and not a ticket for the event), you will be escorted out at 6:00pm. You may visit Disneyland at this point if you have a park hopper ticket. If you do not have a park hopper ticket, I recommend enjoying Downtown Disney.

Ticket details from the Disneyland website:

“The number of tickets available are limited and valid only for the specific event date and hours. Limit eight (8) tickets per person, per event date. Tickets not required for Guests ages 2 and under. Tickets are non-refundable and may not be resold or transferred for a commercial purpose. Costumes are subject to Disney guidelines and should not be obstructive or offensive; please check special event costume guidelines at https://disneyland.disney.go.com/faq/parks/dress for restrictions. Offer and event elements are subject to restrictions, change or cancellation without notice.”

California Adventure at Halloween Time

Oogie Boogie plays a big part in the fun at DCA. Check this out, from the Disneyland website:

  • Demanding that Halloween lasts forever, Oogie Boogieโ€™s oversized silhouette beckons Guests through the Main Entrance as thousands of bats cover the night sky.
  • Heed the Headless Horseman statueโ€ฆ its menacing presence on Buena Vista Street is simply spine-chilling.
  • Get revved as Radiator Springs transforms into Radiator Screams with a happy Hallo-theme all over Cars Land!
  • Bump into your fave Carsโ€™ characters as they strike a pose in hilarious Halloween cars-tumesโ€”see super hero Lightning, van-pire Mater and more!
  • Go for a spellbinding spin on Luigiโ€™s Rollickinโ€™ Roadsters and Materโ€™s Junkyard Jamboreeโ€”both are decked out with new howliday-themed music and dรฉcor!

Also! Guardians of the Galaxy will transform into “Monsters After Dark”. Check that out in this post from Disney.

Disney shares info on how DCA transforms at the following links:

Cars Land attractions

Pluto’s Pumpkin Pursuit

Returning from its debut in 2021! This is a scavenger hunt like those we have done before during Valentine’s Day and Easter at the Disneyland Resort.

It’s only available in Downtown Disney from September 9 – October 31, 2022.

More information on this here.

The Frightfully Fun Parade and Headless Horseman

Both the Headless Horseman and the Frightfully Fun Parade are back. This parade is only shown on party nights, so you can’t see it unless you buy a Oogie Boogie Bash ticket.

I recommend grabbing a spot about 20ish minutes prior to the beginning of the parade. One hour will do if you’re die hard and want front row (but I wouldn’t waste my party time setting up this early).

The parade runs twice each night:

  • 7:45pm
  • 10:00pm

This parade is popular and super cool, but the parade route at DCA is long. It’s really not super stressful to find a good place to watch.

Viewing can be found along the usual parade route and performers do a good job of showing attention to both sides of the route equally, so I wouldn’t recommend one side over the other.

The Headless Horseman rides through before the parade about 10 minutes prior to official parade start time. The parade then follows. The actual parade lasts about 15 minutes total. I don’t think the parade is “scary”, but it’s definitely a departure from the usual happy, life-is-perfect shows. It’s NOTHING like Knotts Berry Farm or such (no disrespect – I love their Halloween celebrations), but it’s a little spooky.

The Headless Horseman was awesome for me to see because as a kid, my brother tormented me with stories of Ichabod Crane. For many – especially young children – this part will likely prove uneventful. He does not make a mad dash through the park. It’s a slow trot, so have your camera ready for photos.

What You Will Find that is Exclusive to the Oogie Boogie Bash

  • Entry into California Adventure 3 hours before party time.
  • Immersive trick-or-treating at several stations throughout the park.
  • The Ride of the Headless Horseman, which is fairly new to Disneyland Resort and previously exclusive to WDW. Love this addition!
  • The Frightfully Fun Parade.
  • Lower lines for all attractions with most open for the party.
  • Villains Grove – my favorite part of this event; see it here
  • Note: Parking is not included with your ticket. Parking is $25 per vehicle.

Villains Grove

The best part of Oogie Boogie Bash is – hands down – Villains Grove.

The time seems to change for when it actually opens. Depending on when you visit, it could be earlier than 7:50pm, which is when it opened the first night of 2023’s event. Has to be dark for it all to work!

Costume Guidelines

Costumes are encouraged for the Halloween Party within Disney’s guidelines here:

“While we encourage creativity, we also value safety and good judgement. Please take a moment to read over our latest rules and regulations:

  • All Guests may dress as their favorite character, but may not pose for pictures or sign autographs for other Guests.
  • Costumes must be family-friendly and may not be obstructive, offensive, objectionable or violent.
  • Costumes may not contain any weapons that resemble or could easily be mistaken for an actual weapon.
  • Costumes may not contain sharp objects, pointed objects or materials that may accidentally strike another Guest.
  • Layered costumes or costume props that surround the entire body are strongly discouraged and may be subject to additional security screening.
  • Costumes may not reach or drag on the ground (e.g., full-length Princess dresses)

For Guests Ages 13 and Under

Costumes and some masks may be worn, as long the mask does not cover the entire face and eyes are visible.

For Guests Ages 14 and Older

  • Capes may be worn if the length does not go below the waist.
  • Themed T-shirts, blouses, sweatshirts and hats are acceptable.
  • Acceptable accessories include: transparent wings, plastic light sabers, toy swords and tutus.
  • Headwear may be worn as long as it does not cover the face.
  • Masks of any kind may not be worn, except for medical purposes.
  • Guests who do not adhere to these guidelines may be refused entry into, and/or removed from, the event, unless his or her costume can be modified to meet the above standards.”

Advice on Finding a Party Ticket When Your Date is Sold Out

Every party night in 2022 is sold out. If you are interested in attending the party, but don’t have a ticket, you have a few options:

If you are staying at a Disneyland Resort Hotel, ask the front desk if they have any available. Typically, they release a limited amount of OBB tickets for hotel guests the day of each party. (This is never guaranteed and should only be used as a last minute option.)

Here’s the scoop:

  • These tickets go on sale at 6:00am PST each day.
  • Guests have been known to line up as early as 3:00am. My friend, Shahla, from @treehousethreadsblog on Instagram, said her husband arrived at 5:30am on 9.6.2022 and got them with no problem.
  • Rumors suggest around 50 party tickets are available most days.
  • You may purchase the number of tickets that match the number of guests in your room – no more than this.
  • You may only purchase them by charging to your hotel room.
  • Lines form for these tickets at each Disneyland Resort Hotel near the front desk.

Need a Disneyland Resort Hotel room? Start here.

When all else fails……or if you’re not staying onsite……you can always try the ticket booth the day of. (My husband joined me one year at the last minute and I found his ticket at one of the ticket booths in the esplanade between the two parks.) I don’t think it happens nearly as often as it used to, but it can’t hurt to ask.

Characters during Halloween Time

Characters can be found throughout Disneyland Resort in full Halloween gear during the day and at the parties, too.

As always, your best option is to use the free Disneyland app to locate characters. Find out more on the app, how to use it, which cast members to find for help, and more before you visit for Halloween Time.

Rare characters seen throughout Disneyland during Halloween Time include:

  • Happy Haunts (the ghosts from Haunted Mansion), Constance (ghost from Haunted Mansion), and Tightrope Walker (from Haunted Mansion) – find them on Royal Street in New Orleans Square in the afternoon/evening after Jack Skellington and Sally
  • Queen of Hearts – find her in Town Square
  • Jafar – find him wandering
  • Maleficent – find her behind the castle
  • Evil Queen – find her wandering Fantasyland
  • Chip ‘n’ Dale in police uniforms – find them in Town Square

Note: Characters are not in seasonal costumes at any of the character dining options. You’ll find classic costumes at character meals.

Check the app for the characters you’re interested in seeing. If someone isn’t listed, ask a cast member who specializes in characters if he or she knows where to find who you’re looking for. This post shares more on this.

Here is what the characters look like in their Halloween gear from previous years.

Jack and Sally can be found in New Orleans Square next to Pieces of Eight (the pirate store):

Cruella can be spotted harassing guests all around Town Square. She despises me and I respect that about her.

14291620_1024622604302049_1463397173637039692_n

The characters are fun year round, but I totally enjoy them in their Halloween attire.

Oogie Boogie Bash “Mix In” & Pre-Party Info

Below, you’ll see lots of mention of a “mix in” time frame.

“Mix In” is the time at California Adventure that includes a park open to guests who have a park ticket and park reservation for that day……as well as guests who have a ticket for the Oogie Boogie Bash that evening. The “mix in” period occurs each day from 3:00pm to 6:00pm as guests already in the park mingle with guests coming in for the Oogie Boogie Bash.

During the Mix-In time, you may wear your costumes.

Also! This event does not have a Pre-Party as Mickey’s Halloween Party did in Toontown.

Entering Oogie Boogie Bash

  • Arrive at 2:00pm and get in line at the main gate. The entrance into DCA from the Grand Californian Hotel is now only an option for hotel guests with an active room key.
  • If you’re super early and the lines are short outside Disney California Adventure, get in line and hang out until your “mix in” time starts. At that point, you’ll enter the gates, be given a paper wrist band along with your event ticket, and then veer to the right to pick up a treat bag for gathering candy.
  • If you’re at the park prior to 3:00pm (with either a Magic Key or regular park ticket), you can find the Blue Sky Cellar to get your wrist band, map and treat bag. The Blue Sky Cellar is located next to Wine Country Trattoria, across from the entrance to Cars Land. The line will trail down a long path toward the Grizzly Peak waterfall, but it moves fast. You’re in better shape standing in that line rather than walking back to the main entrance. Have your event ticket ready to show a cast member (every guest receives a paper event ticket when they enter the gates) and move through the cellar to get everything you need.
  • Once you have your wrist band, you’re free to explore!

What to Do During the “Mix In” Time Period at Oogie Boogie Bash

Use the Disneyland app to locate attractions with lower wait times. Remember, the actual party will have shorter queues, so only enjoy attractions with super low lines.

This is a busy part of the day. And, it’s hot. If you’re in costume and feeling overheated, here are some suggestions for escaping the heat.

Immersive Treat Trails

Had we been attending the event formally held at Disneyland – Mickey’s Halloween Party – I would encourage you to focus less on trick-or-treating and more on entertainment, attractions, characters, etc.

However, I am super impressed with the immersive treat trails at Oogie Boogie Bash. Don’t miss them!

The characters interact with guests in meaningful ways. If this makes you nervous (like the Evil Queen suggesting “It seems they’ve invited JUST ANYONE to this party” while scanning the crowd making sure we all knew that was for us), walk right past the character and proceed with trick-or-treating. These characters are not in place to make guests uncomfortable. They are there for those who want to play along.

When dark arrives, the Villains come out to see guests. They’re set up in front of the wheel of Grizzly River Run. That line is long, as they’re the most popular characters at the event. Opening night, we saw Frollo, Governor Ratcliffe, and Shan Yu. Seeing them later in the evening is ideal, however, you should definitely ask a cast member when they’re likely to leave the event, as they don’t always stay until close.

Party Strategy

At 6:00pm, the party officially begins.

Here’s my best plan for you. I tested it opening night and it worked like a charm.

  • 6:00-7:00pm – Use this hour to get your bearings on the event. Wander, snack, jump in a treat trail if the line isn’t outrageous….just relax and take it all in.
  • 7:00-8:00pm – Head over to the Redwood Creek Challenge Trail to hang out until Villains Grove begins. It opens ‘at dark’, which is around 30 minutes past what your weather app has marked for sunset. (Opening night included a 7:35pm start time.) If you arrive around 7:00pm, you’ll likely be inside Villains Grove by 7:45pm. Most of the queue set up for early arrivals is in the shade. It’s not a bad wait.
  • 8:00-8:30pm – Grab a spot for the early parade in front of Ariel’s Undersea Adventure. It will look a bit crowded when you first arrive. Keep going toward Pixar Pier until you see the crowd thin. The parade starts at 7:45pm and travels through the park from the Pixar Pier area to Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: BREAKOUT! It will arrive in the spot in front of Ariel’s Undersea Adventure around 8:15pm.
  • 8:30pm – 10:00pm – At this point, you’ve completed the two best experiences in the park so relax a bit. The treat trail lines have calmed from the initial park opening hysteria. So, this is a great time to get started on those. Enjoy attractions. Check the Disneyland app for wait times. Skip any wait longer than 20 minutes. Dine and shop. Check out Avenger’s Campus if you haven’t been. WEB SLINGERS is standby during the party! Enjoy (distanced) character photo ops, making good use of the PhotoPass that is included in your party ticket. The event map that you received when you first walked in will be really useful at this point. Basically, this 1.5 hour block is open to your favorite things.
  • 10:00pm-11:00pm – Fun’s over, kids, and now it’s time to get serious. Those attractions that had wait times longer than 20 minutes? Check those again. Repeat favorites. Make this last hour count! And, remember, you can always jump into any attraction queue a minute before the event closes. You’ll be allowed to go on the attraction…and then exit with super low crowds, which is an experience in itself.

The end!

Add On Dining Experiences Available for Oogie Boogie Bash

  • Wine Country Trattoria – Dine here and then grab a spot in the reserved viewing area for the Frightfully Fun Parade.
  • Sonoma Terrace Ooogie Boogie Bash Dessert Party – Enjoy this add on experience during the parade. You get a seat, too! It should be similar to what I experienced here.

***Because the parade route at Disney California Adventure is so long and easily accessible, I don’t think either dining add on is necessary. But, I’ve done versions of both for previous events and have enjoyed them! If I were to choose between the two, I would go with the dessert party. If you choose not to use a dining package, this post shares where to sit for the parade.

If You’re Not Planning to Attend the Oogie Boogie Bash

Here are some things to think about if you choose not to attend the party. My kids haven’t been in years, as it’s not in our budget. But, they love Halloween Time, regardless.

  • Consider visiting the parks on a day that the Oogie Boogie Bash is not happening. If you do not have a ticket for the party, you will be ushered out at 6pm and that’s a tough walk down Buena Vista Street, watching the others brimming with excitement for their night ahead. I’ve done it. It’s not fun.
  • However, the day of the Halloween event usually includes lower attendance at the parks due to people not wanting to leave at Halloween event time. So, check the calendar for closing times at Disneyland and consider visiting DCA during the daytime and leaving for Disneyland at party time.
  • Disneyland will be more crowded than usual due to those leaving DCA for it when the party starts, however, you can still enjoy the park if you utilize what I suggest doing when the parks are crowded.
  • Halloween Screams – the uber popular fireworks show previously exclusive to an after-hours event – is now showing every night during Halloween Time at Disneyland park. This link has more info on when it’s showing, where to watch and more. I typically recommend watching fireworks from wherever you watched a parade or show like Fantasmic! However, Halloween Screams is a show that deserves a castle view. For the full experience, I recommend having a view of the castle for this show.
  • You can still enjoy a wonderful Halloween experience at Disneyland Resort without the party. Decor is up, characters are in Halloween gear and there’s an overall fun spirit at the park during this time. Don’t fret if you don’t want to spend the extra money on the ticket. Enjoy the decor and the park itself. Halloween Time is magical, with or without the party.

How to Make Your Own Halloween Tree at Home + How to Care for Pumpkins

This post features our homemade Halloween tree plus info on how to make your pumpkins last for 6 or more weeks. Even in the heat!

Additional Info

For any show or parade, consider packing a sheet or blanket to reserve your spot. As previously mentioned in this post, I recommend asking one person in your group to secure your viewing space for the fireworks show about an hour prior to showtime. The Matador blanket is an awesome purchase for your visit and to use elsewhere. It folds up to pocket size, but can seat up to 4 people.

People often lose their manners during shows and parades and will sit anywhere to get a good view. Having a sheet or blanket to block off your spot might give you a bit of peace. You cannot leave it unattended, however, because cast members will remove it if you do.

Have the best time ever!

  1. Hi there! I am going to Disneyland on Oct 14 & October 15. I do not have tickets for the Oogie Boogie bash and my tickets are not park hoppers. I was wondering on which day you would recommend going to Disneyland and what day for California? Thank you!!

  2. Wow, this is such a comprehensive and informative guide to Oogie Boogie Bash and Halloween Time at Disneyland! You covered everything from attractions, food, entertainment, characters, and more. I canโ€™t wait to visit Disneyland during this season and try some of the immersive treat trails and see the Frightfully Fun Parade. Thanks for all the great advice and photos!

  3. Hi! The link for how to ride every DCA attraction by lunch time on the day of the Oogie Boogie Bash is broken! I would love to read your recommendations!

  4. Hello! I saw the note about potentially getting last minute tickets to Oogie Boogie Bash if you’re staying at the Disneyland hotel on morning of the event. I was wondering if it was possible to get tickets even if you aren’t staying at the hotel. My famiy and I aren’t from the SoCal area and just found out that we (my mom, dad, and I) would be going down there soon. I’ve been trying to find any way to get last minute Oogie Boogie tickets because we’ve never been before and would love to take part. I don’t mind getting up extremely early the morning of either to walk to the Disneyland Hotel and get some. (I’ve even checked Craigslist which I know is probably not the best way to go. But, honestly I’m trying my best at this point.)

  5. Thank you so much for laying out all this helpful information! You mentioned that you could buy limited Oogie Boogie Bash tickets if you stay at a Disneyland hotel. Do you just line up at the registration desk to buy them in the morning? Or is there a special line somewhere in the hotel to line up? If you check in on say 9/20, can you buy tickets for Oogie Boogie Bash on that night, provided you get to the hotel early in the morning?

    1. Hi, Bowen.

I just edited my post to include a note saying that lines form near the front desk of each Disney hotel the morning of the event. I’m not clear on which nights would be available, but I’m assuming you should be able to buy for the 20th if you check in that day. Just arrive early!

      Good luck.

  6. Thank you for the tips! One clarification, we have tix to OBB and plan on entering thru GC after lunch at Naples. We also want to start the mixin at Avengers Campus. We are not magic key holders, can we still obtain our wristband at Blue Sky Cellar rather than fighting the crowds at the front? Thank you!

    1. Hi Troy.

If you go through the entrance at the GCH, youโ€™ll get your wristband, party map and candy bag right after entering the park. No need to go to Blue Sky Cellar.

      Have fun!

  7. Does the Frightfully Fun parade during OB Bash 2021 go the same direction at both parade times (i.e., from the back near Pixar Pier toward the Hollywood area)? Or does the second parade go in the reverse direction?

Love your website and have been using it for years!

  8. Hello,

I plan attending this year and want to take my boys on Halloween day, do you know if tickets sell out fast on that day? I am not a annual pass holder, just wanted to know if I will be able to get them that day

  9. Hi Casey Iโ€™ll be watching Halloween Screams tonight (yay) so no fireworks. Iโ€™m wondering where youโ€™d recommend we stand for optimal viewing. Thanks as always for all your great advice.

  10. Casey,
What do you feel the target age is for the Oogie Boogie party? It goes so late so I am wondering if is more an 8+ kind of thing. I am trying to decide if it is worth stretching our budget in order to go.

  11. You are the real MVP!! Thanks so much for these incredible tips. I will be going solo for the first time because I couldn’t get any of my other friends to come along and I feel super confident about what to do during Mix-In and Oogie Boogie. Thanks again ๐Ÿ™‚

  12. Hi. My family and I are attending the DCA Halloween party. We aren’t big into the shows and had recommendations that our kids might be a bit scared for the parade. Do you have tips on just doing the rides and trick or treating? Should we just start at the entrance of the park and wander our way through all the rides and hit the trick or treating in between or do you have an idea of what our route should be like to make the best use of our time there.

    1. Hi, Jami.

I would follow my tips and strategy for when you first arrive so that you take full advantage of using MaxPass. I share all about that here:

      https://disneylanddaily.com/your-guide-to-oogie-boogie-bash-and-halloween-time-at-disneyland/#Oogie_Boogie_Bash_8220Mix_In8221_Pre-Party_Info

Then, once the party officially begins, enjoy some treat trails and jump on rides as you wish. But, those first few hours with MaxPass will allow you to get the most rides done initially. Then, you can relax at the party and just wander.

  13. This is such an excellent post. It’s not even our first time going (to Mickey’s party), and I learned so much. Thank you for the information.

  14. Thank you for all this information! I have a few questions. We are going in October on a Thursday. My family is mostly interested in meeting and taking photos with the special characters that are present for the party only. 1) Do you know if any of those character meet & greets start before 6:00pm? Do any other Halloween activities begin before 6pm? At WDW, guests wearing their wristbands could meet certain characters beginning about 3 or 4 pm (when it officially started at 7pm), but I wasn’t sure if that was the case here. 2) Typically, which characters have the longest lines? Besides going to the ones we really want to see, do you recommend a certain order for visiting characters to allow as many meet & greet opportunities as possible?

    1. Hi, Becca.

Special event characters don’t come out early for Oogie Boogie Bash as far as I have seen. When the party was at Disneyland, they did…at the “Pre-Party”, but this event at DCA doesn’t have one.

The most popular by far are the villains.

I would follow my suggestions on how to do the Villains Grove, parade, and Villanious and then see characters after.

      Enjoy!

  15. Hi Casey thank you for all the awesome information you’ve been giving us! Can we take pictures with the villains that are in the trick or treat lines?

  16. Hi Casey, you mentioned that there are characters on the trick-or-treat trails can we get pictures with them or are they just kind of in the background to look at? I love all the info you give we are excited for our Oogie Boogie bash on the 22nd of October. Thank you!

    1. Hi, Dana.

You can’t “pose” with them exactly, but you’re welcome to take photos or video of them. They’re such an awesome addition to the party. You have such fun ahead!

  17. Awesome review! This sounds like the greatest event. We went to Mickey’s party last year but it all the fun got shut down because a big storm came in. It was pretty disappointing. Hoping to try again another year!

  18. Thank you so much for all your tips, especially for the Oogie Boogie Bash! I haven’t been to Disneyland since I was a teenager and taking a three year old felt overwhelming. Your site and Instagram have relieved my worries. I can’t wait to see the Villains Grove. Were there multiple Marvel villains?

  19. I’m really interested to learn about what characters will be meeting exclusively during the party now that it’s moved to DCA and also how this impacts all of the special Halloween themed characters in DL (like Mickey and Minnie in their Halloween costumes). Can’t wait to hear your review from the 17th so we can figure out what we can only do during the party vs. experiences we can check off on other days at the parks!

  20. Hi my family and I are going be in Disneyland when the Halloween event is going on Tuesday 29 and Thursday 31. Does Disneyland and DCA have parties going on at the same time? Or is one of the parks is having a party going on and the other is just a regular day? Thank you for your help

    1. Hi, Chris.

The party that was hosted at Disneyland in previous years has now been moved to DCA and renamed/rethemed. Disneyland won’t host a party this year.

So just regular days! And, Screams fireworks at Disneyland. Yay!

  21. Thanks Casey, for all the info. Our question: if DCA will usher out non-ticket holders (of the Ooogie-Boogie Bash) at 6pm, but we just sat down to dinner (say at the wharf) at 5:45, would we be able to finish our food and not be ushered out until we were finished eating? We wouldn’t be trying to ride any rides or get halloween candy. Just didn’t want to have to carry out our dinner to eat it outside DCA.

    1. Hi, Bill.

The system is quite smooth and less stressful than it sounds. If you’re dining, you’ll be able to finish your meal. Absolutely. Eventually, the dining areas will be swept by cast members – like every other part of the park – to ensure all remaining guests have the wrist band that is given with a party ticket. But, you should be finished before then.

      Enjoy!

  22. Thank you for all your posts and updates. they have been integral in helping us plan our upcoming first visit to Disneyland in September.
We don’t have park hopper tickets, and only plan on doing one park a day from Sept 23 to 26th. We weren’t planning on going to the bash, hence the day of the bash (Tuesday and Thursday) would you recommend doing DCA during the morning hours as it will be lower crowds than normal or sticking with Disneyland?
    Thanks,
    Divya

    1. Hi Divya.

Visiting DCA on Tuesday or Thursday would be ideal, as it should be slower prior to the event that night. And, youโ€™ll be avoiding Extra Magic Hour, which is typically hosted at DCA on Sunday, Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

Use my strategies in this next post to ensure you donโ€™t wait more than 20 minutes for any attraction in either park. (With one exception – The Millennium Falcon.)

      https://disneylanddaily.com/how-to-start-your-day-at-the-disneyland-resort/

Also! Donโ€™t forget about your own Magic Morning. If you have a 4 day ticket, you are entitled to one early admission day at Disneyland Park. I explain more here:

      https://disneylanddaily.com/extra-magic-hour-and-magic-morning-at-disneyland-resort/

This Halloween post you commented on will be updated again and again as Disney releases info. Iโ€™ll also be at a media event for the fall season this coming Tuesday. Find me on Facebook and Instagram for lots of info for this time of year.

      You have such fun ahead!

  23. Hi Casey,

My family and I will be at the first bash in September and I was wondering if Maxpass is still included in the ticket? Weโ€™re planning on purchasing it for all of other days in the parks, but I just wasnโ€™t sure how itโ€™s going to work with the new Oogie Boogie Bash this year or if itโ€™s really even necessary for it. Thanks so much for all of your great information, youโ€™ve been my favorite Disney person to follow for years!

  24. Hi Casey,

I plan to visit Disneyland in Sept 2020 for a honeymoon & our main focus is to see the Halloween party. I have never been to this park, and will only be in the area for a few days. We plan to stay at a good neighbor hotel for 3 nights. I am much more used to WDW, where I am able to stay the whole week and have much more flexibility as far as which days we will visit each park based on shows, parties, etc- as well as much more advanced planning as far as fast passes, dining, etc.

My biggest concern is that the tickets for the Halloween party do not go out until the spring of 2020 and we will already have our trip booked by then, do you have any recommendations that can assist me in knowing that I will be able to attend the party? Or recommendations on what days of the week they usually have the party?

    Thanks in advance!

    Sabrina

    1. Hi, Sabrina.

Within 3 nights, there should be at least one party available to you. Check with the dates for this year’s party to see how they lay out on the calendar. There’s no guarantee that Disney will follow the same pattern for 2020, but at least you can see how frequent they are and how many days go between even event. I’m confident one will fit with your trip.

For LOTS of planning info, including a section for WDW vets, check out this post:

      https://disneylanddaily.com/a-first-timers-guide-to-disneyland/

And, let me know how else I can help you!

  25. Thanks so much for all of this info! Question for this 2019 Bash, will there be a Dia De Los Muertos area again? Iโ€™m hoping my 2 year old could see a Coco theme. She loves the movie!

    1. Thereโ€™s already an area in DCA kind of delegated to the movie Coco so itโ€™s likely that area might get a makeover Los Muertos style.

  26. Hi Thank you for the great information – we are planning on being at the parks on the last week of October and looking to attend a Halloween party either on Tuesday or Halloween day. How busy is the party on Halloween? Should I avoid it and go for another day?

  27. First off, I love that I am able to learn so much from your page. I will be visiting in Oct 2019 with my husband, 2 sisters (11 & 13). We were hoping to stay Tues. Oct 22- Sat. Oct 26. off site, but enjoying Disneyland one day and attending the party at DCA one night. I am now frazzled I have to wait for all your tips and advice to be put out until this September for the Oogie Boogie Party! I plan to follow your Disneyland Big Kids ride guide EXACTLY….so excited ๐Ÿ™‚

In regards to this years upcoming DCA Oogie Boogie Party will you be offering a ride guide or list of items to accomplish that day/night? Also do you recommend I purchase our party tickets ASAP when they are released? I didn’t book flights just yet because I am waiting to use free miles that will be issued any day now.

    1. Hi there.

Iโ€™ll have guides on what to do during the day of the party and during the party as we get closer. Iโ€™ll make sure youโ€™re ready!

Buy party tickets ASAP. They will sell out.

  28. Hi Casey!

I know you just posted the schedule and ticket pricing to your FB page but I was curious as to whether or not this year the ticket will be a park hopper as it always has been? I haven’t seen anything about it being a park hopper ticket and I am still holding on to hope as I LOVE Disneyland but I just want an expert(you) to tell me if it will be? ๐Ÿ™

  29. Hi Casey

I may asked this on facebook but is Maleficent ever a character that is out for pictures in Disneyland?

  30. Hi Casey, We attended Mickey’s Halloween Party @ WDW in 2015 and as a Military family bought our tickets at the park, the evening of the party, despite the party being sold out… Does Disneyland offer this option to military families?

  31. Hi Casey,
My husband and I with our 2 kids (4 & 6) are going to be at Disneyland the week of 10/1/2018 and got tickets for the Halloween Party on 10/2. Weather reports are predicting rain for both Monday (1st) and Tuesday (2nd). We are so disappointed! Do you know if any party-specific events would be cancelled if it rains? Also, what about the trick and treating trails? Any insight would be great!!

  32. Do you have a strategy plan if you’re planing on going to Disneyland for the 3 hours prior to the party, not California Adventure? We want to spend all of our time there. What’s your best plan to get on Space mountain and the haunted mansion? Also, can you add maxpass to your tickets for just the 3 hours prior to the party? is it worth it and will there be any fastpasses left?

    1. Hi, Jennifer.

I just added info for guests attending Disneyland only for the party. Let me know if you have any questions on that.

You cannot add MaxPass to the party ticket, as it’s a special event ticket. There likely won’t be many FASTPASSES at that time, so not a huge loss.

      Enjoy!

  33. Hi Casey!

Thank you so much for this post! It’s always so much fun to plan ahead of the trip and reading your posts help tons! Do you know what rides will be closed for maintenance? Specifically for Oct. 26th?…. pointing me in the right direction is greatly appreciated!!

  34. Hi! We bought tickets for the Halloween party for Sep. 28. Since we are allowed 3 hours ahead of the start of the party, we are thinking of going to DCA and then move to Disneyland once the Halloween party starts. Now my question is can we go directly to DCA or do we have to go to Disneyland first to get our wristband and then go to DCA?

    1. Iโ€™ll have an update in this post for how to enjoy the parks and party ASAP! Iโ€™ll be there for the second party, too, and will update after that. Youโ€™ll be set!

  35. Hi, any idea how strict they are about costumes in the park during Halloween time outside of party hours? I have a Blue Bayou reservation at 5pm (party starts at 6pm), and I donโ€™t want to have to go back and change! Think Iโ€™ll be let in with a costume that day?

    1. From my experience, they are quite strict. I would try to alter your costume to work during the day and then add to it come party time. Would hate for you to get turned away upon entry.

  36. Hey Casey!
Thank you so much for this enire post! It has help answer most of my questions. ๐Ÿ™‚
Have you heard any update on the Blue Bayou dining package? My husband and I are going to the first party on September 19th. Reservations for that day open up this upcoming week. I just would like to make the reservation as soon as it’s available so we don’t miss out on seating. I will probably be calling Disney Dining once that day is available. ๐Ÿ™‚ If you get any info from them, I will pass it along.
I also saw that you made a comment back in February that the party might be moved to DCA. Any word on if that is the case?

    Thank you again!

    1. Hi, Karras.

Nothing yet on the Blue Bayou package. I’m checking every day. If you learn anything from Disney dining, let me know!

No mention of the party moving to DCA this year as rumors suggested. Full speed ahead for Disneyland!

      1. Hey Casey,

I just wanted to follow-up on the dining for the 2018 Halloween party.
I called and was told that there will be a dining package. ?? Yay!!
It will be at the Blue Bayou. Seating will be in front of the Carnation Cafe and across the street in front of the Starbucks.
They have not made it available yet. But I was told you should be able to make reservations in two days. (July 24th)

  37. We will be at the park from 8/16 – 8/20. Do you think Haunted Mansion is still open by that time? Thanks Casey!

    1. Hi, there. I doubt it, unfortunately. It typically goes down mid to late August for the transition. You may see it for the first day or so…..fingers crossed for you! I’ll update this post as soon as we have more info.

  38. I read somewhere that MaxPass is included with the purchase of the Mickey’s Halloween Party ticket? Is that true for the “Max Pass” portion of it? I noticed that you mentioned Photopass+ was included so maybe the other person was confused.

    1. The PhotoPass portion is included with your party ticket. FASTPASSES are typically not used during special events or parties. So, MaxPass shouldn’t be. Just the photo portion of it.

      1. Hi Casey! Do you recomend to buy Maxpasses from 3pm to 6pm to be able to grab them before the party? It’s that possible? I want to take advantage of as many rides as I can, It’s my sisters first time at Disneyland and I want that she enjoys the most that she can.

  39. If we are doing a Halloween party this year (on a weekday), and entering CA at 3, thoughts on how long the lines would be for Guardians (not Monsters after Dark)? My daughter hasn’t been on it since it changed from ToT and we’re wondering if we need to plan to get MaxPass and try for Monsters After Dark, or just hope standby isn’t too bad for the regular version, or try to do both! She didn’t love ToT, but mostly because it was so spooky.

      1. It looks like Monsters after Dark is starting at 3:00pm this year. The Disney site for Monsters after Dark says “Through October 30, 2019, Guests with Guardians of the Galaxy โ€“ Mission: BREAKOUT! FASTPASS selections that indicate a return time after 3:00 PM will experience Guardians of the Galaxy โ€“ Monsters After Dark”.

That being said, the operating hours say 5:00pm.

  40. Hello! Thanks for the fantastic advice! We are headed to DL in September 2018! I was wondering if we get the blue bayou parade package would you say that staying in that reserved parade area for the fireworks is a good idea? Will we be able to see the castle/projections from this area or should we move towards the castle more?! Thank you soooooo much! This is our first fall trip to DL and we are very excited for the Halloween theme! ?

    1. Staying in the same area is great. You canโ€™t see the castle or projections, but I love this area for fireworks.

However, this year might be totally different with a possible move of the party over to DCA. Iโ€™ll update this post as Disney releases more info. Hopefully soon!

  41. Hi Casey,

Just a quick question….What time do you think we should get in line for the party? If we can go in at 3pm should we be in the esplanade by 2pm?

    Thanks!
    Jeanette

    1. Hello Casey!

Do you know if they’ve had any tickets available for sale before the party starts? We are looking for two more tickets for October 17th for my sister and nephew who want to join us.

      Thanks!

      Olivia

      1. I have heard they are super sold out this year with very few left – and those are typically held for guests staying at a Disneyland Resort Hotel. If you’re staying onsite, be sure to ask. Otherwise, ask the morning of your party. I’ll have my fingers crossed for you!

    1. Hi, Jennifer.

MaxPass is not included, as FASTPASSES are not used during special events, including the Halloween Party. However, your Halloween Party ticket does include PhotoPass this year. It’s good at Disneyland Park only, at official party start time (6 or 7pm, depending on which night you attend). It’s not good at DCA at any time and it’s not good at the 3 or 4pm entrance time…….only at official party time.

      Enjoy!

  42. The main reason we got tickets for the Halloween party is to meet Maleficent. She is my 7 year old’s favorite. Will we have time to go to DCA first, then line up for villains? What should our plan be to maximize the chance of getting a photo with Maleficent?

    1. I recommend going to DCA immediately upon arriving for the party. Visit Cars Land and enjoy Buena Vista Street and then head over to Disneyland for the pre-party in Toon Town, which starts an hour prior to official party time.

Your best bet for Maleficent is at Villains Square, which is located at the front of the park, in front of the Main Street Railroad Station. I would jump in line as soon as you see that it’s open and ask cast members when Maleficent might be seen if she’s not out when you arrive. They’ll do their best to help you estimate a time to return to see her. Let them know how important this character is to your child. More on Villain’s Square here:

      https://disneyland.disney.go.com/entertainment/disneyland/mickeys-halloween-party-villains-character-meet/

      Enjoy!

      1. Thank you Casey!! Your site has been my main source for planning our Disneyland/San Diego 8 day trip ๐Ÿ™‚

  43. You’ve noted that most nights DCA stays open until 10pm on Party nights but Disneyland’s website says that DCA is open until 11pm on the Friday night parties but ONLY until 8PM on weeknight parties… Just thought I’d give you a heads up. Of course, this is ALWAYS subject to change depending on the Disney Gods that decide these things. Thank you for all your wonderful work!!! This is so helpful!

    1. Thank you! The times are varying quite a bit this year. One evening showed a midnight closing at DCA! But, I’ll edit this post so that no one is surprised by 8pm. I appreciate your input.

Also? BEST EMAIL ADDRESS EVER. So awesome.

  44. Thank you so much for all of the information on your site Casey! It has really helped me in planning my first ever Disneyland trip this October! I do have one question though..I am familiar with WDW’s policy on park hopping and just want to make sure I am understanding the Halloween party’s policy correctly here at Disneyland. I have purchased a Halloween party ticket for October 17th and I have a ticket to enter the park that day. Are we going to be able to pass back and forth between Disneyland and DCA during the party or is the Halloween party ticket only available for one of the parks during the party even though they will both be open?

    Thanks for your help!

    1. Hi, Jennifer! Just like at WDW, you have purchased a ticket for only one park. No problem! Plenty to do.

With that in mind, the Halloween Party Ticket allows a one time entrance into DCA (California Adventure), so I encourage you to use that for a couple of hours and until the pre-party in Disneyland. Otherwise, stay put at Disneyland for the best experience. Enjoy!

  45. What recommendations do you have for a Halloween party only day? What can we fill our morning/afternoon doing before the party without a ticket to the parks that day-

    1. Arrive well before the 3:00pm entry at DCA. Get lots done – see DCA, walk Buena Vista Street, and indulge in some sort of snack. Then, move onto Disneyland for the remainder of the night. Stay late and enjoy the short lines. Do not trick or treat unless the line allows you to walk up. Enjoy!

  46. Have you heard anything about special party events in DCA like trick or treating or characters for party guests only?

    1. Hi, Amy.

Haven’t heard anything of the sort and don’t expect to. From what I understand, all party activity will happen at Disneyland only. I’ll update this post if anything else is added.

  47. Hi Casey!

We noticed there are two parade times for the Halloween Parade during the MNSSHP. We have dinner reservations at Blue Bayou with the Parade tickets, but not sure which parade we are going to be getting tickets for. Do you know the cut off times for the reservations and what time frame gets you into which parade time? I did try calling the Disney Dining Reservations, but they didn’t know either ๐Ÿ™‚

    Thanks!

    1. Hi, Natalie. I would call dining again or check your reservation confirmation. The confirmation should note the parade time and the dining line should know if it doesn’t. I haven’t heard of the cut off times this year. Wish I could help! 714.781.DINE is the number to call. Good luck!

  48. Me again! Im wondering if you can think we can cover the following if we are in the park for Halloween by 3pm (monday 25th of Sept):
    Itโ€™s a small world
    Alice in wonderland
    Dumbo
    Finding Nemo
    Jungle cruise
    Storybookland canal boats
    Haunted mansion

We were going to spend the tuesday at California Adventure Park and the Wednesday half day we have at Disney, but im thinking once my son sees Cars Land we may as well check our luggage in there ๐Ÿ˜‰
Im not fussed about missing the big rides, we also have 6 days at Walt Disney World and have managed to get fastpasses for the kid friendly ones, and 2 days in Disneyland Hong Kong which will give us plenty of time as its meant to be quiet and a small park.
We don’t need to trick or treat or meet characters, but is a kids costume supposed to be spooky or can we dress him as Catboy and that’ll do?
    Thanks for your help!
(Let us know if you come up with a plan to ride RSR 1,208 times in a day before we get there… hahahah)

  49. Hi Casey,
our first time at Disney will be for The Halloween party. I can see from the schedule that the parade is on at 8:50 and 10:30pm and the fireworks at 9:30pm. We will be with a 3 year old but coming from Australia (and its the day we land) so we want to try and keep him up as late as possible- not worried about getting him to bed early. What is the best way the see the parade and not miss getting a good spot for the fireworks? Do we do the fireworks first and the last parade?
    Thanks for you help xx

    1. Hi, Claire.

The second parade is much less crowded. If you can stake out a spot for fireworks (walk up about 30 minutes prior and squeeze in on Main or closer to the castle if you can), see those and then rest and sit down for the second parade. Between the two shows, you should have time to find a spot and get settled. It will likely feel good for you to take a break, too.

If your child will stay awake, that’s your best bet!

  50. Hi Casey! We are going to be there during late October for Halloween time this year. I’m just wondering if you know when Its a Small World usually closes to get its holiday overlay? I want to prepare my kiddos if it’s not going to be open when we are there! Thanks!

  51. Hi Casey! Thank you for everything you do!
Quick question…We were at the Halloween Party in 2014 and watched the end of the night show in front of the Main Street Train station. It was all the Villains and it was fantastic! Do you know if they still put this show on? We were front row and it seemed like not many people knew about it. We will be going again this year and I wondered if we should try to watch it again.

    1. I’ll be there opening night to look for it. I don’t recall it over the past couple of years. Usually, at that time, people are lining up to meet them on their way out. But I’ll be looking!

  52. Casey,
We’re visiting Disneyland the last week in September. We typically visit during the winter, so we’re really excited to experience the Halloween season. We’re trying to choose between the Halloween party on Wednesday or Friday. Do you think that there are any clear benefits to either one? Will they have pretty much the same crowd size? Thanks for your help!

  53. Hi! So we have three days, no hopper. Monday Oct 2, Tuesday Oct 3 (party night), and Weds Oct 4. We will do two days at DL and one at DCA. Do you have a recommendation for which days for each park?? I was thinking DCA Monday and DL Tues and Weds. Or would you do DL Monday and Tuesday and DCA Wednesday?
    Thanks for all you do!

    1. Krisi, I would visit Disneyland on Monday, California Adventure on Tuesday and then Disneyland on Wednesday. That way, you’re avoiding all of the EMH/MM and you won’t be at Disneyland and have to leave during a party night.

  54. Casey,
We’re visiting Disneyland the last week in September and are trying to decide which Halloween party date that week would be the best choice. Assuming all of the dates sell out again this year, does that mean the parties will have the exact same number of guests? Or does Disneyland sell more Friday party tickets to accommodate higher demand? We have three young kids, so we’re always trying to find the least crowded times/days possible:) Thanks for your insight and for all of your helpful tips on attending the Halloween party!

    1. I wish I knew those specifics, Kristin. Weekend parties always feel busier in my opinion, but I don’t know how many tickets are sold or how Disney accounts for those numbers. I recommend weekday parties over weekends for sure.

  55. Thank you so much for all this awesome information! I have been to the halloween party in years past, but not since they added the upgraded parade. We want to see the fireworks from a spot in front of the castle, but also want to see the parade. What’s the best way to accomplish a good view of both? Parade first, then fireworks, or vice versa? We are willing to “camp out” for a spot. Thanks for the help! ๐Ÿ™‚

    1. The later parade is usually less crowded. I would set up for fireworks first and then attend the later parade. You’ll use your time more wisely that way. Have fun!

  56. My daughter performs at the disneyland resort on Oct 11th. We will get a two day hopper through the dance group. We would like to extend our trip but the halloween party is happening the day before and the day after we plan on using our hopper. This will be my year olds first trip and another trip will probably be a long time to follow. Would you recommend getting an additional general admission or the halloween party?

    1. I would attend the party. It’s no fun to have to leave the park from it, so if you have the option, take that morning off and then be ready to enter the party at 3pm or 4pm, whichever works for your dates.

If you don’t want to attend the party, just be sure to spend your time at Disneyland during those two days without the parties and then on the final day – before or after – visit DCA instead.

  57. Hey

    Great info. 2 questions:

    1) Is DCA still free to visit during the Halloween party? can you see the new decorations in DCA for free (included in the visit)?

    2) Is Paint the night parade returning to DCA for halloween 2017?

    Thank you

    1. DCA is included in a regular day’s ticket or with your Halloween ticket once it’s entry begins (at 3pm or 4pm, depending on which day). Guests at DCA will not be escorted out at party time. It will remain open during the party at Disneyland Park.

PTN is returning to DCA. No official timing yet. I’m dying to know!

  58. Hi Casey. Do you know what the general refurbishment length is for those rides? We are headed to DL and DCA September 12-13. I’m afraid we may miss some rides that are being transitioned for Halloween.

    1. Space Mountain takes only a few days.

Haunted Mansion takes over two weeks.

Not sure about the ones at DCA. All new this year. Wish I could help more. Sorry!

    2. I will be there 9/14-9/16 and both Space mountain and Haunted Mansion are scheduled to reopen on the 15th. You never know though you might be surprised and they could open early if they are ready. :O)

  59. Hi Casey,
Do you know if max pass will be available with the Halloween party tickets? I’m just weighing the pros and cons of going to the party vs regular day because I don’t know if my young children will be able to stay up late enough to be worth it! Thanks for all of your hard work on this site!

    1. I asked and was told that since FASTPASSES are not typically available during special events, MaxPass likely would not. But, I’m assuming the photos would be if you purchased from that day.

      1. Any update with this? We get the MaxPass with our annual pass, but since we’ll be using the special event tickets, I wasn’t sure if it would still work. I’m mostly concerned about Haunted Mansion.

        1. Update on the FASTPASSES? None available during the Halloween Party, as with most (all?) special events. You can use MaxPass up until the official party start time, but after that, you can’t select any more FASTPASSES. Lines are typically much shorter. I just checked (at 11:30pm) and the wait time is only 20 minutes for Haunted Mansion Holiday. Wait on this attraction until later in the evening or during the first parade, when many guests gather to watch.

  60. Hi Casey,
Do characters wear their Halloween costumes on regular days during Halloween, or only at the Halloween parties?

    1. Hi, Michelle.

Skip down to the “Characters” portion of this post to see lots in their Halloween gear. They are in these outfits during the day and at the parties throughout the season. So cute!

  61. Hi,
Thanks for all the info in your blog! Im wondering if you can help me for this year. We fly into LAX from Australia on Sep 25th, and are staying in a hotel across from Disneyland. Before we realised we would be there for the Halloween party on the 25th, we were just planning on getting a 3 day park hopper ticket and heading there straight from hotel check in. Now Im wondering if we just get the Halloween ticket for the first day, checking in and having a nap for a few hours before the party allows us entry, and then doing California Adventure on the 26th and Disneyland on 27th (we have to leave the park for another flight at 4pm). Without being able to see the entertainment schedule yet, what time would the parks normally close on the in-between Halloween party days? Would there still be fireworks on the Tuesday normally? If so i think it will be work still buying the park hopper just for the flexibility? What are your thoughts?
    Thank you!

    1. Totally agree with your plan. Buy the party ticket for the 25th, visit DCA on the 26th and then Disneyland again on the 27th. Buy a hopper if you want the flexibility. It’s not totally necessary, however, to have hoppers.

DCA will close around 10pm this time of year on regular and party nights.

You do sacrifice the Magic Morning (early entry) buy purchasing one party ticket and a 2 day park ticket, so, you’ll need to decide if that’s worth the money. I can help you prepare if you want to save the money and just do the party and the two days.

      1. Thanks so much! We decided on a 2 day park hopper and Halloween ticket. So the Tuesday we will spend most of the day at dca and have made a dinner reservation for paint the night as fantastic won’t be showing while we are there… And spend the Halloween party and the Wednesday at dl. My son really wants to go to cars land so that’s our priority.
Thanks again for all the time you put into this page!

  62. Are all the characters in DL in Halloween costumes during that time, or are there any that are in classic outfits? What are the chances of finding, say, a Mickey in regular red pants?

    1. Many characters at Disneyland Park are in Halloween gear. In years past, DCA has always included dapper Mickey day and night during Halloween Time.

Your best bet at “classic” Mickey (or red pants Mickey – I like that!), is in his house in Toontown.

When I visited WDW for the first time ever, I wanted CLASSIC MICKEY. Not Mickey with a chef hat on at the Contemporary. Not safari Mickey at AK. I get it. ๐Ÿ™‚

  63. Just to clarify for this year’s party. I can buy a regular day ticket for DCA and will not be ushered out during the Halloween party hours? Halloween party hours just apply to Disneyland?

    Thanks!

  64. Hi! I know today is the day to buy tickets if your a AP, DVC member ect, we are dvc members and i can’t find anywhere on the dvc website or disneyland website that is stating we can buy party tickets today. would rather buy online if i can, is this something i have to call DL or DVC to buy the tickets? I just don’t want to wait too long because were going to there 27th party and i know it will be busy/ book up ! thanks!!

    1. Lauren, I’m so sorry I’m just now getting to see this comment. Somehow it got “approved” prior to me responding. I heard DVC members don’t have early buying privileges this year. Were you able to buy? Anyone else? I know APs and Disney Visa Card Holders have bought already.

  65. I know you are not a weather forecaster, but do you have any sense about comparing windy conditions between September and October? Or more to the point, do you know if fireworks more likely to be cancelled during September or cancelled more during October? I want to maximize my chances of seeing the Halloween fireworks show. Also you wrote that after viewing the parade, to walk to the castle to see the fireworks. Did this work well for you? Did you have short people (kids) with you and could they still see the projections on the castle? I find viewing castle projections for my kids the most stressful part of DL planning. Thanks!

    1. Hi, Louise.

Halloween fireworks are awesome with the castle back drop. I agree about the projections……it’s stressful seeing them. But, the Halloween parties often have the projections on Main. So, do walk as far as you can, but don’t panic if you stay on Main. It can be less chaotic and you’ll still see the images on the buildings.

So hard to predict wind. Wish I could. Cancellations do happen often, unfortunately. I’m sorry I don’t have a crystal ball for this!

      1. Oh of course no-one can predict the weather 100%, I was just wondering it the fireworks tend to be cancelled more one part of the year than others because of winds. Just as there are colder temps in the winter, I was wondering if there was a windy month or season. Thank you for the information about the projections.

      2. Just so everyone knows the newest rule; they do not allow saving spaces with blankets anymore. People kept doing this earlier and earlier, hours before a parade or fireworks and created an obstruction/bottleneck in too many places.

  66. I’ve been trying to find a list of the “magic shots” at the Halloween party, but have only found a list for WDW!! Do you have a list?

    1. I don’t have one, but I’ll add it to my list to get info on this week. Check out Facebook.com/DLRPrepSchool for my day’s trip report and info on the Magic shots there. I’ll do my best!

  67. Hi Casey!
I’m taking my boyfriend to disneyland/DCA for the first time on a Halloween Party day, but won’t be attending the Halloween party. How do they usher people out exactly? For instance, can we get in line for a ride at 7 or is there a certain cut off time? I want to maximize all Disneyland time before hopping over to DCA. Any input would be great!

    1. You can get in line just before it’s time to leave, but after the ride is over, you’ll be ushered out. (They won’t pull you out of line.) Cast members will note party guests by bracelets. Eventually, all guests without a bracelet will be politely ushered out.

  68. Hi. Our family of 5 is going Oct. 12. We can’t stay for the party which is really going to bum out my 9 and 11 year old sons. And it will be the youngest’s birthday. We were there at spring break and once 18 months earlier. So Dland is not truly novel to the kids anymore. What would you suggest to make the birthday extra special AND help the kids not be disappointed about missing the party? (Fortunately, their 16 year old sister will be happy no matter what we do!)

    1. Hi, Shanda. You could upgrade your ticket to a park hopper and enjoy California Adventure after the park closes to non-party guests. There’s tons to do there – especially for big kids. Downtown Disney is fun, too. Check out this post for ideas on downtown:

      https://disneylanddaily.com/the-ultimate-guide-to-downtown-disney-2/

And here is an attraction guide for California Adventure:

      https://disneylanddaily.com/california-adventure-attraction-guide/

Both would be fun for your crew!

  69. Casey, I just noticed one error and one thing that has changed. The error is where you state the preferred viewing place is you have “Main Street (near Cafe Orleans)” should be ‘Carnation Cafe’ and the change is the AP bags are now at the Opera House since it open now. Oh, and all dates are sold out. Awesome post though, so detailed. Very helpful. ๐Ÿ™‚ Thanks

  70. Hi Casey, we have reservations for the Blue Bayou dining package. Do you think the parade viewing spot justifies the cost/lost time in the park. If we still have to arrive for the parade an hour or so before it starts in the reserved area, I think that kind of defeats he purpose of the package.

  71. Hi! We will be there next weekend! Just want to double check, characters at California Adventure Land will NOT be in Halloween costumes? Thank you for all of the tips!!!

  72. Did I read correctly that fast passes will be running this year during the Halloween parties? Also, what does close during the party?
One year when we went we missed the tiki village because it closed up early, and I think last year the train shut down, or the monorail? Just trying to figure out how to fit it all in. ๐Ÿ˜‰

You don’t have a link to Harry Potter World planning tips do you? We’re planning to squeeze in a Trip there, a beach day, and a Disneyland Halloween party during our fall break. Right now it seems like the most logical to go to Universal Studios Sunday, then take it easy Monday till we go to the Halloween Party, feet won’t be as tired, won’t have been up late etc. but I was wondering if the crowds would be horrible on a Sunday, so we should just opt for a Tuesday at Universal Studios? Such tough choices, but I want the trip to be perfect!!

    1. FASTPASSES are not running for the party, but you can use those that are pulled pre-party start time. No info on Universal. Sorry! I believe Micechat had a good review. Crowds are always heavier at both parks on weekends. Disney will be more crowded.

  73. Hi Casey– Loved the Party posts from last night. You are getting me very excited! Question I am hopeful you can answer. What is the real deal with over 14 costumes? We were there last year and there were some super amazing costumes, but then the new guidelines came out in the summer. It seems like costumes are being discouraged on adults or is it just being toned down. I have read the official guidelines Ie) capes to waist only— so that rules out a lot of villains and not long dresses —specifically not full length princess dresses. I am wondering what your take on costumes on adults is this year. (last Year my sister was an absolute killer Queen of Hearts)

    1. Great question. I tried to take photos of other guests at the first party and noticed some rule breakers (cape to the ground, wings that were not transparent, etc). Honestly, it looked like every other year to me. That being said, I would respect Disney’s guidelines and be prepared to make changes if they fuss at you when you walk in. They’re working hard to keep us safe and the costume guidelines are designed for that. I definitely didn’t see any masks, but I did see people with full face paint. When in doubt, call Disney and explain your idea and see if a cast member can give you a preliminary ‘approval’. I would hate to tell you something is OK and then it get turned down at the door. Their general number is 714.781.4565.

      1. I actually talked to someone at Disney about face paint since no masks are allowed. They told me that face paint was perfectly fine.

    1. Hi, there.

I didn’t go to it on the first party night because my dinner reservation timing conflicted, but I heard Toontown is hosting the “pre-party” one hour prior to official party start with trick-or-treating and possibly characters. Enjoy!

  74. Hi!

Great & helpful article! Will the paint the night parade happen on ‘non-party’ days? Also on the ‘non-party’ days will the regular fireworks occur?
    Thank you!

    1. PTN won’t happen until the “holiday” season, which does not include a party. I will post when the parade is happening as soon as I know more. But it won’t happen during Halloween Time. On non-Halloween-Party days, Fantasy in the Sky fireworks go off. It’s a 4.5 minute show. Don’t plan around it. Enjoy it from wherever you are in the park.

  75. Hi Casey, I’m late to the game and just now tried to purchase tickets for the Halloween party, they are sold out for the days we wanted. How likely is it that they’ll add more tickets/ have tickets available later on? Should I keep checking or am I out of luck for this year?
    Thanks!

    1. Hey, Megan. If you are staying at a DLR hotel they sometimes release tickets the night of for hotel guests. Otherwise, there isn’t a safe way to suggest getting tickets. Wish I knew! I would call just in case to see if they will sell them to you now. Can’t hurt. ๐Ÿ™‚ Call the main Disneyland line.

  76. Great article! This is really going to be helpful. This year is my family’s first Halloween party at Disneyland. We are really excited. I was wondering if you could share a park map of this years (2016) Halloween party. I’m anxious to start planning how we are going to manage our time there.
    Thank you

  77. Helpful article but doesn’t really have the most up to date info. For example, there is info out there about the Blue Bayou dinner package and other updates that have been available for a while now.

    1. Hi, Deana. Info on the Blue Bayou dinner can be found under the Halloween Party section. I visited the park day 2 of Halloween Time and shared lots of details and links to many photos of characters in Halloween attire, the new beignets, the poison apple mugs, etc. What, exactly, can I help you with that isn’t in my post currently? Happy to do whatever I can for you!

  78. We are headed to Disneyland, Monday, Sept 12. I just showed my son the video for Hyperspace Mountain, is it now going to be Ghost Galaxy while we’re there? Hyperspace Mountain was Space Mountain, right?

  79. Mickeyโ€™s Halloween Party Dinner Package at the Blue Bayou is already selling out – The first date I tried to get was already gone. It appears to be a “regular” prix fixe dinner at the Blue Bayou and you get a fast pass to the Frightfully Fun Parade to a reserved standing room area. I’m super excited about it. ๐Ÿ™‚ I wish the fast pass gave us seats for the parade (like last year’s Mystic Spirits dinner for the fireworks), but I’ll take what I can get! Based on this new dinner package I doubt they’ll do the Mystic Spirits dinner this year.

  80. We are headed to DL at the end of September with our 3 year old. Do you know anything about their Halloween parade? I’m just trying to gauge it’s “fright” level. Thanks!!

  81. Oh my goodness-we get to go!!! Tickets for the first night bought, and a wonderful surprise for our girls! =) Do you have any idea (roughly) of numbers for the Halloween party nights? Or would it compare to a low, medium, or high attendance day? I am so excited to meet the villains!

  82. I’m considering the Blue Bayou dinner during the party (just husband and I). I’ve read your post on Facebook, but I’m wondering, how much time was spent at the dinner itself? I know we would want to make time to do some of the character photo ops as well. This is our first party (first timers to DLR) and I want to make sure we would still feel like we’ve been to the Halloween party if we attended this dinner as well. Thanks!

    1. Hey, Jaime. Are you talking about the Mystical Spirits on the Bayou dinner during the Halloween Party? I haven’t seen that it’s available this year. If it is, it took up A LOT of the party. I wouldn’t recommend it again. I felt lucky to go because I got to attend another party, too, but if this had been my only party experience, I would have been upset. We had to check in around 5pm, shortly after we were let in for the party. Then, the dinner started around 6pm and lasted until 8:30ish….then we were escorted to fireworks……by the time the show was over, it was after 10pm with an 11pm end.

      1. It’s looks like they are going to have something at blue bayou on party nights, the DL website has just a very small snippet of info. It doesn’t say it’s the Mystic Spirits, just halloween dinner I believe. I have been checking the DL webite daily to try and book the WOC dining package in Oct (still can’t do it until they release Oct park hrs, which is driving me mad that they have Oct days listed for the schedule but no actual hrs for the park still) and this Blue Bayou info just showed up yesterday.

  83. I noticed the first party day (Sept 23rd) doesnt have a scheduled time for Halloween fireworks, however, the other party dates do. Did I miss the memo on them skipping out fireworks for the first day? I wouldnt have bought the tickets had I known that, lol.

  84. Grrrr, booked a trip before knowing Halloween Party dates. I’m flying in with my soon to be 12 year old son and we can’t change our dates. Fly in Tuesday 8/27, Angels game Tues night. Staying at the Grand Californian that night to get the hotel guest extra hour to DCA Wed morning, chose this week due to crowds and Angels’ schedule. Already bought 1 day park hopper passes but now am wondering about that decision, if it’s worth it to call DL and beg to change to single park (DCA) then buy Party tix for DL. We have no interest in trick or treating, only rides for this pair. Let me know your thoughts about how we can maximize this one day in the park. 12 year bday is a big deal in our house and typically involves flying to SoCal purely for DL. This time, with a boy, he wanted to split time between his fav baseball team and DL…I’d love to maximize our time in the parks. Thanks for your input!

  85. How young is too young for the Halloween party? I’ll have a 22 month old when we go in October and I’m thinking someone will have to stay behind in the hotel with her. Would it be too scary for a toddler? Thanks!

  86. Hi! I love your blog, it has been so helpful in organizing our family vacation!!! We will be arriving September 12 and didn’t realize Halloween would begin so early at Disneyland. Do you think that Disneyland 60th anniversary merchandise will still be sold in Disneyland? Or should we buy it online now?
    Thanks!

    1. I would buy online now. Disney rarely lets merchandise hang out past its timing. The Diamond Celebration should be over September 5. Go ahead and get what you want now!

  87. We have tickets for the halloween party but I was wondering if we can do the minnie and friends breakfast that morning since we have the halloween tickets or would that require a regular day pass?

  88. Hi,

So the tickets are open to the public today correct?? How do we buy these?
Thanks so much for all your info

  89. If we go to the park during the Halloween party night, will we be able to visit the same attractions as we would if we went during the day with a regular day pass? If so, then could we not just go at 4:00 and spend the evening like a regular non party evening and not do the trick or treating or dancing?

    1. Are you asking if you can just go at 4pm with a regular day pass (I.E. Not buying tickets to the party) and just not partake in the extra party events? A regular day pass bought that day will only let you stay in the park until party time (6 or 7 pm). Then all non-party guests will be escorted out and only the people who purchased party tickets will be allowed to remain for the party.

  90. Do you expect ALL October dates to sell out again like they did last year? I wonder if Disney will raise capacity this year or just will make it much more expensive (like they did this year in WDW) to not have all of October sell out so early this time. Any insight?

    1. Not sure yet, Tommie. This is an unusual year with the 60th ending and the unknown to follow with fireworks capability, Star Wars Land construction, etc. I’ve learned that – even when I’m sure Disney has pushed the limits too far – a customer for just about anything they create will emerge. Anxious to know all the answers to your questions, too.

  91. Hi Casey
I love your blog! I see you responded to another commenter and said you would post on your facebook page when tickets for the 2016 Mickey’s Halloween party go on sale, so I will keep an eye out for that.
Do you have a rough idea of approximately when they might go on sale? Eg mid July? August?
Also, we are trying to plan a trip to Disney around attending the Halloween party. It looks like we might arrive at the parks on the day before Halloween, and depart November 3. What’s your gut feel of how frequently the parties will run, given your past experience? Ie do you think there is likely to be a party on Sunday October 30 as well as one on Monday October 31? Or are the parties unlikely to run 2 days in a row?
Thanks again for your wonderful blog. It is the best Disney planning source that we have found.
    Thanks
    Karen

    1. Hi, Karen.

I’m guessing we will see tickets go on sale in the next few weeks. Should be in July for sure.

Last year, they had parties on the 23rd, 25th, 27th, 29th and 31st. Assuming this year will be similar.

It’s rare to have parties on back to back days.

If you don’t already follow me on Facebook.com/DLRPrepSchool, check that out. I’ll post there first when tickets go on sale. Then, I’ll update this post as soon as I have more info from Disney.

      Thanks for your kind words!

  92. Hi Casey,

Do you know how quickly 10/31 party dates sell out? I have to wait until tickets go on sale for the general public and I’m afraid that particular date will sell out first.

    Thanks!

  93. When can you wear costumes at Disneyland? Anytime in October? Only at the party? Also, when silk the 2016 party schedule for Disneyland be released?
    Thank you!
    Maurine

  94. I love this post! Even though I’ve been at halloween, and even to the party, it’s been a few years, so it was a nice refresher as we are going this year at the end of September/beginning of October. Lots of great tips! I was wondering if you know when they normally release the dates for the party so we can get our tickets as early as possible? Do they still release them to passholders before the public? I don’t have one anymore, but my sister still does, so I’ll totally have her buy them for me if they do!

  95. Hello! I adore your site,it is so informative!! You are Amazing!! I was wondering if you know when Disneyland typically puts out their schedule of dates for Mickey’s Halloween Party? I just saw that they have released the dates for Disney world’s event! Thank you for your time !

  96. Casey,

Do you know about when Disneyland will publish dates for the 2016 Halloween parties? Also, how soon after that can we buy tickets? We have 5-day Park Hopper tickets for Oct. 27-Oct.31st and even though I have 219 days to plan, I am so excited, I can’t wait!!

    Alison

  97. I am wondering if there are any character dining places that do anything special the day of Halloween? Also I thought I saw somewhere that there will be crafts at the Halloween party , is this right or was I reading something crazy wrong.

    Thanks!

    1. Hi, Tanya.

The party used to include crafts in the carnival section, which is not open this year. ๐Ÿ™

No special Halloween character meals, unfortunately. But, the whole park is decorated beautifully, so Minnie’s would be your best option if you want to get close to having a Halloween-ish meal.

  98. I am sooo grateful for you and all of your advice!!! LOVE your sense of humor! Made me laugh out loud more than once! You go above and beyond to help others have a truly magical experience! Thank you. Really thank you! One question that I haven’t found an answer for yet is this…can you get fast passes for the rides that are open during the Halloween party? Should we get them before party officially starts, during or just ride? Again, thank you. Appreciate you making everyone feel like family and friends!

  99. All the tickets are sold out for the Halloween party on the day we are there. ? Is there any chance of getting tickets any other way?

    1. Hi, Danielle.

The tickets are all sold out for this year. The only (possible) option would be that if you’re staying at a Disneyland Resort Hotel, they sometimes (no guarantee) have tickets for sale at the front desk of the hotel you’re staying in. I would ask as soon as you arrive.

  100. Thanks for all the info! Do you know if we can enter the Halloween party through the Downtown Disney entrance?

  101. I’m a little confused I wanted to take the kids to Disneyland during October to the Halloween party but do I have to buy separate tickets for the park and for the party I’m just a little bit confused on how it works

    1. The party does require additional tickets. I actually advise not buying a day’s ticket on party nights and only attending the party to save money, but still have a great experience.

    2. Yes, you need a separate ticket for the party and they’re almost sold out. Check the dates still available asap and buy tickets if you’re interested. You must have a ticket to attend the party.

  102. This will be the first time husband and i will experience the Halloween event. We are super excited to attend. I do have a question though, we wont be bringing any children with us. (Im actually pregnant right now ๐Ÿ™‚ but would we be able to still be able to stand in line and “trick-or-treat” to get candy even if no kiddos are with us?

  103. Casey,
Love your blog…it is going to be very helpful for our magical day.
Please help! We are a group of 6 planning on coming to Mickeys Halloween Party on Oct. 31st (all adults but truly kids at heart and mega Disney fans). We are staying at the Paradise Pier Hotel the 30th and the 31st. I really wanted to make reservations at the Blue Bayou, but they are already booked for the 31st. We only have tickets for the party so we are not able to enter the park until 4:00 that day. I was wondering what restraints you might suggest, either at any of the hotels or in Downtown Disney that would be fun for us to do before we go to the park on the 31st. I want to plan on enough time for us to eat and then go back to our room to get dressed for our Halloween adventure at Disneyland. I was thinking maybe Goofys Kitchen or one of the other restraints at the hotels. What would you suggest that would be fun and give us enough time to get ready for Halloween? I know I need to make reservations if we end up doing character meal.
    Thanks,
    Vicki

    1. Surf’s Up! at Paradise Pier Hotel is the only one who has Mickey and Minnie, so if seeing Mickey (that is the only dining experience he goes to), that should be your first choice. Goofy’s is fun and entertaining. I suggest choosing one of these (I also love Storytellers, but they have unusual woodland creatures……..Meeko, the bears from Brother Bear, Brer Fox and Chip n Dale), and then enjoy Downtown Disney until it’s time for your visit to the party. Swim at the hotel or sleep in……then enjoy your meal and get read for the party. You have such fun ahead!

  104. Very excited! We are regular WDW guests and now we are attending the Halloween party on the 27th October at DL. Big surprise for our girls. We haven’t bought park tickets and we just doing the party. Any must do tips would be much appreciated.

    1. Trick or treat later than earlier………enjoy rides at the beginning of the evening and trick-or-treat later, if it all. Don’t spend valuable park time in line for candy. Buy it later at Walgreens. ๐Ÿ™‚

  105. Are all of the rides open during the party? We missed Peter Pan in the spring and I’d love to be able to ride it a couple times, with short lines!

  106. I just noticed that on the DL calendar, the early entrance hour in the mornings are switched for Oct 10 and 11. DL has the extra hour on Sunday, and DCA has the extra hour on Saturday. Do you know why? This is messing with my plans!

    1. Hi, Kirsten.

Disneyland does this occasionally to accommodate special events. I know it’s frustrating. They could switch back……hours and such change sometimes. So sorry this is trouble for you!

      1. Ok thank you! That’s just crazy. I’ll just keep an eye on it. The CHOC Walk is on Oct 11. Do you have any idea if DL or DCA will be busier that day?

        1. CHOC Walk brings people out, so yes, the crowds will be a bit thicker that day. You’ll still have a great time….you’re doing your research……that makes all the difference!

  107. Hello!

I must say, I have been reading your posts so much lately – I will be going to Disneyland for the first time at the end of October. Thank you for all of this information! I live closer to Disney a World, and usually go there, so I am extremely excited to go to Disneyland!

Do you know if any restaurants and shops close during the Halloween Party?

    1. Hi, Jordan!

Thrilled you’re going to experience Disneyland! I love both parks, but my heart belongs to DLR.

I will ask tomorrow while visiting the parks if anything closes during the party and will post on Facebook. I usually do a post after each day’s visit with what I learned. Check there for more info. Facebook.com/dlrprepschool

  108. Hi Casey!! We are so excited to go to Disneyland this year but we will be heading that way the day after Halloween. Won’t be in the park until the 2nd of November. We are hoping and praying that Halloween decor will still be up a few days after halloween? do you know at all if it will. Thank u so much

    1. Hi, Mechelle.

The park transitions the day after Halloween until November 13 from “Halloween” to “Holiday”. So, you’ll still see some orange color and decor……but less ‘spooky’ stuff……which isn’t all that much, anyway, because Disneyland isn’t too spooky. You should see fall decor……but less distinctly Halloween. Safe travels!

  110. Going to our first Halloween party on Sept. 25th. Four of our group already has tickets but we added another person and the tickets are sold out. Do you think there is any chance we can buy a single ticket that morning to the party at the ticket booth?

    1. I have never heard of this being available. Wish it was. A lot of people don’t know about the party and then want to purchase that night, but can’t. Perhaps check disboards to see if they’re able to connect you to someone trying to sell?

  111. Hi Casey, thanks for the great info. We are going in 25 days! I bought Halloween party tickets already. Just wonder if you know when the park map will be released? I am dying to make plans. ๐Ÿ™‚

    Thank you!

  112. Hi Casey!

My family are frequently at Disneyland, but have never been to any of the ticketed special events. We happened to book a trip over the October 27th party and we are planning on going (mostly because I can FINALLY wear a costume to Disneyland – I admit, I’m a bit of a nerd!). Do you have any inside info on which dates are busier? I know weekday parties are generally not as busy, but I thought I’d see if you had any ideas about the type of crowds we might see on the 27th.

    Thanks,

    Audrianna

    1. As you get closer to the holiday, it will become more crowded, so the 27th will likely be pretty crowded. But, the parties are generally less full than the parks, so you’re still ahead of the game!

  113. Going to the Halloween party on the 22nd which starts at 6pm so we can get in at 3pm. I would like to eat at Blue Bayou which is taking last reservations at 3:30pm on that date. If I’m there for the Halloween party will I be allowed to eat there? Or is that only for Disneyland day guests? Hoping rushing through the park to get there by 3:30 won’t be too tough. Thanks!

  114. Just saw on the day of our Halloween Party (10/12) that the Soundstational Parade is at 3, which is right when we should be allowed entry. Won’t this be a cluster? Do we try to jump in and watch parade or take train around? Any tips would be appreciated!

    1. I’d try to see the parade if you walk in at that time. Standing near the Fire Station on Main is a good spot because it’s a bit distanced from the parade and will let everyone acclimate to the excitement before throwing them right in. You’ll see the parade – just not what is on the ground. Enjoy!

  115. Casey,
Thanks for all the DL help. We are attending the party for the first time. I think I have figured out what’s changed for 2015. One question – I thought I read someplace the villains arrive with flair on main street and then you can meet them. However, I’m having a hard time finding where I read this and also a hard time figuring out a plan to see the villains arrive, meet a few villains, plan for dance parties, etc. We are at DL for many days so there’s not a crush to hit the rides. Do you have a resource or recommendations? Thanks, Kelly

      1. Thank You! Thanks for the tip on the Matador blanket. I had never heard of it and already ordered on Amazon.

During the party are there usually other singing acts, besides Cadaver Dans, like in New Orleans or at the Dia de los Muertos area? We have done the MNSSHP at Magic Kingdom several times and find the live entertainment at the party to be so much fun. I thought maybe I shouldn’t have booked another Disney trip but now I’m getting soooo excited!

        1. You’ve covered most of the live entertainment (good research!), but Disney is known for surprises. Ask a cast member upon arriving if they know of any. Otherwise, walk the park and enjoy! I hope you run into some fun events.

  116. Hello! I was just wondering, if you’re going to Mickey’s Halloween Party and you also get a ticket to be at the park during the first part of the day, are you allowed to wear your costume all day? Or would you have to leave the park before the party and then change into your costume? I know kids through the age of nine, I believe, can wear costumes all day any day, but how does that work with the adults on a day for the party?

Anyway, I’m so glad I found this website prior to my trip in October! ๐Ÿ˜€

      1. Hi, Casey. We are AP holders, and will be at Disneyland during the day of the Halloween party, and also purchased tickets for the Halloween party. Would you happen to know where we can get our wristbands inside the park without having to exit the park to get them?

  117. I can’t believe that I have NEVER done H’ween at Disney…I really need to get on that…Disney is right down the street from me and my youngest is still little enough to really enjoy the “lighter side”, I think…

  118. We have a 5 year old and we all wanted to dress up in costume. Is the Magic Kingdom the only Halloween event, with the exception of Universal, which I understand is too scary for a 5 year old. We will be there on the Thursday before Halloween through the night of Halloween.

  119. I just got our tickets for MNSSHP (we’ve done it several times at WDW but this will be our first at Disneyland). One question:
What is the food situation during MNSSHP? I noticed you can’t book dining on line at MK those nights. Is it just counter service that is open then or will there be sit down meals but no reservations?
FYI: I called reservations (way more laid back than WDW… we make reservations 180 days out typically when we go there) and we are below 60 days out and the very nice lady told me they haven’t announced park hours or times yet so they can’t book Fantasmic or World of Color. She also said it was unlikely that Fantasmic would run except on the Weekends but that could change depending on crowd levels.
    Enjoying the posts!

    1. Hi, Roxanne.

All of this is true. As you get closer to your timing, you will be able to reserve dining. DLR hours are announced super late compared to WDW, which makes reservations tough. I’d check online or call every couple of days to see when the park hours have been published.

Fantasmic! will likely move to just weekends as we move into the fall/winter months. But, the 60th anniversary shows (Paint the Night, Disneyland Forever and WOC) will happen each night that the Halloween party is not happening.

      Hope this helps!

  120. Hi, I was wondering if you had any suggestions on things to do for Halloween night around the area. Do you know if downtown disney offers trick or treating or other activities?

    Thank you !

    1. Hi, Jennifer!

They don’t trick-or-treat in DTD, however, everything is themed with Halloween decor and such. Marceline’s Confectionery (the bakery) will have treats for sale and other stores should be themed, too.

  121. We have tickets for the 29th as the 31st was already sold out. We are looking for something amazing and fun to do Halloween night after the parks close at 7pm. Any suggestions? Does Downtown Disney have trick or treating?

    Thanks ๐Ÿ™‚

  122. Hi Casey,
I was soooooooo excited to see this post! A few questions, can you tell me what the character calvacade is, it says in your post it happens before the paint the night. Also I noticed in the first comment about World of color only being on weekends, we will be there a Tuesday- Thursday October 6th – 8th, any chance they will run it one of the days?? I am really hoping to get to see it! we have seen the Disney World version of Fantasmic so if we miss it I am ok with it, but do not want to miss world of color ๐Ÿ™

    1. Hi, Erica.

I’m anxious to see the official schedule. Word is that the 60th anniversary celebrations will continue daily (on non-party days), but I’m doubtful Fantasmic! will happen each day. I’ll check at the parks this week.

  123. Hello Casey!!
I’ve been planning my tripp to Disneyland for a few months now, I am going to LA from october 7th (arrival) to October 13th(depart), I was planning on doing Disneyland on saturday 10th and DCA on sunday 11th but I recently learned that on sunday 11th the CHOC walk will be holded…
Do you think it is a good idea if I change going to Disneyland on thursday 8th and DCA on friday 9th? What would you do? What dates would you choose for each park? I really hope you can help me!!

    1. Hi, Nicole.

Either combination would work. I think I’m leaning more toward your second option to avoid any excessive crowd issues.

Please let me know if you have any other questions!

  124. Hi Casey!
My family attended the Halloween party for the first time last year. We enjoyed it so much that we’re doing it again this year! We went on October 29 last year and it was really crowded, so we’re going to go earlier in the month. I really enjoyed the Halloween parade, and I’m bummed that they’re chosing to show “Paint the Night” instead. I know that it’s for the 60th, but with an AP, we’ve seen it many times.

        1. I am really uoset about it too. The are canceling the Halloween parade this year. I really wanted my daughter to see it, since its her first time going to the Halloween event.

  125. Thank you so much for this post! We are going Oct 14-18 and have party tickets for the 14th. Your website has been so helpful in planning our trip! We have done World twice and are looking forward to doing land. I have a question about dining reservations. When my 60 day window opens can I get online and make reservations at midnight like World? I’ve read your dining recommendations but maybe I missed this piece? Thanks so much. Keep up the awesome work. You have made planning this trip so much easier!!

    1. Hi, Blair.

Yes, you should be able to at midnight. Dining at DLR is quite laid back in comparison, so it may not be entirely necessary. Fun fact: I’ve never seen a meal plan used in the park. ๐Ÿ™‚

  126. Hi there! I love love love this site! Im planning a trip for my family the first week of October (park hoppers for tues, wed & thurs) and was debating on doing the mickeys party that wednesday Oct 5th (costs, we have a large family) I REALLY want to see the World of Color show as well as Fantasmic and the fireworks. Ive been trying to find what to expect in October and have been reading they only do the above on the weekends in the slower season and on special events. Will they have them on the day of the Mickey party? Thanks! Keep up the greats posts!

    1. Hi, Camille.

Yes, as the season slows down, shows will only be on weekends. You will see Halloween Screams at the Halloween Party, which is an amazing fireworks show and one only visible for Halloween Party guests. The regular fireworks, Fantasmic! and WOC schedules remain to be seen, as Disney doesn’t put out calendars until a few weeks prior to your timing.

I would plan on regular park days Tuesday and Thursday and then the party on Wednesday. It’s a really fun event and you can get in as early as 4 or 5pm. Spend the earlier part of your day at the hotel swimming or such.

I have an affiliate who sells park hoppers at a discount here if that helps:

Let me know what questions remain!

      1. Casey,

Not to be disagreeable, however, a recent Disney Park Blog indicated that all Diamond Celebration nighttime entertainment would be offered throughout the week (including weekdays) on all non-halloween party nights. Just wanted to make sure everyone had the most up-to-date information.

Here is the link to the blog, with a Disney Blogger answering questions in the comment section. http://disneyparks.disney.go.com/blog/2015/07/mickeys-halloween-party-expands-to-17-nights-with-return-of-halloween-time-at-the-disneyland-resort-september-11-november-1/#comments
